Editor in chief of gamespot fired due to review

Where'd That 6th Toe Come From?
Seems like gaming journalism has hit a new low, or rather gaming websites in general.

Basically it means that the higher ups at Cnet fired a editor and chief for giving a bad game a bad review. Now gamespot isn't really what you'd typically call a reliable review site, but if anything this furthers the case in proving that Gaming journalism is more and more being dictated by the sponsers/ hosts of said site.

The game in question was Kane and lynch, the latest turd fest from eidos, who's working on guess what...Deus ex 3.

The game got a 6 from Jeff(the reviewer) and he bashed it completely and utterly. Now if you visit the site you are treated with two seperate skins of the two titular characters.

Now I know many of you wouldn't agree with his reviewing format, but for a man to lose his job due to coporate bullying is just another sad example of the big man small man coporate problem we see in review sites such as Gamespot.

Anyone remember when Ign had the Mcgriddles skin?

Re: Editor and chief of gamespot fired due to review

This doesn't seem particularly surprising and I doubt this is the first time something like this has happened.
When it came to either letting the ad-money go or just changing the review and firing the reviewer, they probably didn't flinch the slightest.

The game was made by IO Interactive, the same guys who made Hitman. Eidos is just the publisher, though they do own IO.

What, someone bad-mouthed McGriddles and got fired? :eyebrow:

edit: Shouldn't this be in General Gaming and Hardware btw?

your right actually it should be in general gaming.

The Mcgriddles thing was just a shot at Igns shotty advertisments, because a few years back, Ign a very well known gaming site had there ENTIRE website skinned to show how wonderful the new Mcgriddle was.

Its just sort of fucked up though, Jeff has been with Gamespot for ten years. I wonder if even the fanboys will take notice and actually realise that the site has no real credibility.

Who here predicts that if Bethesda(or rather Zdnet..sp?) runs full page ads that fallout 3 will most likely get a 9 even if its a complete and utter waste of plastic?

well...that is no surprise .
A lot of people were angry of him because of his stupid reviews .Mostly because of the 8.8/10 he gaved to The Legend Of Zelda : Twilight Princess .

This is just messed up.

Now, this is the first time I even heard of this guy, since I don't visit websites like IGN and Gamespot, and I haven't even heard of that game he reviewed either. Also, I don't care if he was a complete dickhead, who wrote reviews with his toes. That's not the point. The point is, they hire him to write reviews on games. If you hire someone to review a game, he should have the right to write whatever he wants. And firing the same person not for other reason, but because the developer of the game didn't like the review - that is what's messed up.

Then again, these days more and more people who play videogames are just frat boys and "gangsta"s, so it's not really surprising.

Not surprising, we've been talking about the companies pressure by advertising money for a while now.

Another stab at their credibility.

Well, it will be just like China then.

Majority of Chinese publications are mouthpieces for their advertisers, if not the gov.

I always thought Gamespot was kind of reliable, at least compared to Gamespy and IGN, which are utter shit. I guess not, though.

I stick to Gametrailers nowadays, as it sticks to video reviews, cutting down on the bullshit somewhat.

This comes as absolutely no surprise to me, and I couldn't care less either, as all the "big" gaming sites are rotten to the core.

Hahahahahhhh.....hahahaHAHAHAHAHAH!

HAH!

...

You're kidding, right?

The man has my respect as a person and a reviewer for being honest even though it lost him his job. I hope many people find this out and realise that game sites are indeed swayed by money and don't give honest reviews. (Though most people worth it already know.)

Sincerely,
The Vault Dweller

What the hell? At least I get to see the game in action. Even if it's just carefully selected sequences, it's still better than a written review with (often) pre-release cinematic screenshots of the game. It's been spot on so far. I don't feel like they just hand out 10s, either, like others do. It's difficult to find a review site without an editor who's an obese jerk sitting in his parents' basement flaming everything console and everything not made for a very select group of people.

Don't be a douche, douche.

I usually just read user reviews. I read the highest one and lowest ones, weeding out the ones that sound like elitist pricks or cock-gobbling fanboys and then judge by how valid and thought out sounding the various arguments are. The I gauge it against my own love for the series, and information I have on-hand, and my method has yet to let me down.

I try to avoid journalist reviews of just about everything, actually. They can't be trusted.

I personally liked Kane and Lynch and found some of his points to be completely inane, but that's kind of the point of having reviews in the first place.

This is serious shit right here people.
