Is there any pattern to this, either fixed or random? Ever since they took the Jefferson memorial, I'm seeing them all over the place now with small satellite relays. Even stranger are the vertibirds, I've already found several all over the area that were being guarded by Enclave soldiers, at least one moment where they actually landed one and attacked me near Megaton, and up in the north east area near Raven Rock, you can see at least 3 that are just flying overhead towards some unknown destination.

there are pre-defined locations where they land and set up outposts (you can see map in the fo3 guidebook)

If you don't know already you can also shoot them (Vertibirds) down and they explode like the cars. I used a minigun (Eugene actually) on one when it was landing and letting off a few guys for me to kill and take their Encave/Tesla power armor for reshop. 
It started smoking before they got off and I finished it off before it flew away ignoring the new comers to do it. A few times the vertibirds flew off smoking when I tried using a combat shotgun/assault rifle on them. I'm sure other heavy power weapons would do the trick as well.
