Error! Could not create primary and back surfaces.

Make a .BAT file and place it in the same directory as the tactics .exe file. Now place this line in the bat file.

c:\tacticspath\tactics.exe -s

and run the bat file

Error!

-Xp
-DirectX8.1
-1gig ram
-pentium 4

When I try to run it, the screen just goes black and and I get this error saying...

"C:/dev/phoenix/display/directx7/dd7_display.cpp(715):**fatal error**:Could not create primary and back surfaces"

The strange thing is, C:/dev doesn't even exist.

And after I click "ok" for that box, Tactics closes....

And after I get that error and click "OK" this pops up...

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

"Runtime Error!

Program:D:/Program Files/14 Degrees East/Fallout Tactics/ BOS.exe abnormal program termination"

Anybody hav eany clue what this means? I'm guessing it's using an old version of direct x that it thinks is there but it isn't, but I still have no clue what to do.

The C:\dev etc part of the message is generic ignore it. Try updating to direct x 9 and your graphics card drivers.

Or using one of the command line options.

Oh and use the search function in future.

Merged.

And make sure that no programs have crashed in the background or try diabling your antivirus etc.

When you installed these codecs did you reboot by any chance? The only time I've got the error I'd been running FOT successfully for a couple of years and the only thing I could fathom was that FT Tools had crashed on exit so it was still hanging in the background when I started FOT up.

I suppose that it could also be down to not being able to run the bink movies. Anyone have any idea how to find out what codec or compression was used to create a bik file?

PS I hate your sig pic. Didn't you used to have some naked chic? That was much better.

I have that same problem, but i cant find the solution in the post... what did you do to play th egame?

Anyone know any solution to this problem? Installed normally, then tryed to run from shortcut and exe, this
"C:/dev/phoenix/display/directx7/dd7_display.cpp(715):**fatal error**:Could not create primary and back surfaces"

Error came up... Installed patch 1.27 and still this same error comes up and I cant play...

Help needed--

Yeah, that doesnt help anyone with problems, but whatever...

My problem was caused by integrated graphics that I used for some time... Namely S3 IGP.

Now that I have proper graphics card Tactics works just fine...

Yeah it does, IF THEY READ THE THREAD!

The game is old, this is an old problem that's never been solved, even the tech support (when there was one) couldn't help. The only suggestions for overcoming the message have been posted, if someone knew a definative answer it too would of been posted. At this late stage it's unlikely anyone will come up with a definative answer, especially since most people have found different solutions.

These days this is a thread for posting what you did to get the game working, not for asking for help.

Can you please specify the codec updates you installed to make it work?

I am on XP Pro and have tried several codec packs, no luck :(

Blast from the past. I just bought tactics from GOG and installed it on an XP Fusion VM instance on my Mac. I got the errors reported here and so far no luck getting anything working. :( I've been waiting with great anticipation for the Fallout 2 RP 1.3 and got Tactics as an interim, but this doesn't bode well for FO2. Cheers.

vmware / parallels solution

@uv23: I'm using VMWare Fusion to run Windows on my mac as well - on the GOG forums I found this fix to make the game work:

Right click on the desktop shortcut for Fallout Tactics and go to properties. Then, in the "Target" line where you can edit the file path where the shortcut points to, add a space and "-w" (without quotation marks of course). This will make it run in a window and the game should work fine after that. You can download a patch that lets you use higher resolutions too, so you can maximize it without going full screen and take advantage of the extra screen real estate. Let me know if this works for you.

I kiss you! Well, I will when I try it and see if it works. ;) Cheers.

It worked! Sort of... for some reason, I can't add the -w from the property window. It says the target is invalid. So I had to open a command window, manually navigate to bos.exe and run it with the -w. Thanks so much!

Next up, I tried to modify the res options in the display screen but ended up with the same error I was getting without the -w param. Can you let me know which high res patch you're using? Cheers.
