F2 Revived Installer + Restoration Project v2.0 = Error

kam

First time out of the vault
I'm trying to run Fallout 2 on Vista 32bit with ATI Radeon HD 2600. I've the latest DirectX and driver for the Radeon. It was impossible to install Fallout 2 from the original cd therefore I tried to install with the F2 Revived Installer (v 1.02.25). The installer and the game worked fine.

However when I installed Restoration Project v2.0 I got an error which says "Error initializing video mode 640x480". I tried to use the compatibility option for 640x480 but then I got another error which says: "Fallout appears to be running in compatibility mode". Then I choose to run the program in compatibility mode for Windows 95. A different error showed up: "This program requires Windows 95 with DirectX 3.0a or later or Windows NT version 4.0 with Service Pack 3 or greater."

I also tried to uninstall and then reinstall High Resolution Patch but got the same errors. Can anybody help with this problem?

I think it might be an SFall Issue. make sure you have the files, and in the right spot and play with the config file.

First, I replaced ddraw.dll as Sfall's patch suggests but still got the 640x480 error. When I replaced ddraw.ini, even though the read me file says that it may interfere with other mods, I still got the same error. I'm not sure what you mean by playing with the config file, can you be more specific?

i had similar problem with win7 and posted the solution in the RP thread, i had to change keayboard something and mouse soumething in the ddraw.ini to make it work.

i found the solution in the sfall FAQ its was the first one in the list.

I believe that's the solution for a different kind of error, about input devices. I tried it too but doesn't work.

So, googling for this "Fallout Revived Installer", I found that this is basically a pirated version of Fallout 1 or 2 with the unofficial patches already installed. Bad idea! Why should people here help you to figure out what mistakes dumb pirates made when they made their custom installer?

Instead try to use the original CD, here's a tutorial: http://www.nma-fallout.com/article.php?id=1593

As I stated before, it wasn't possible to use the original cd and its installer on my system therefore I used revived installer because it was the first solution I found to this problem; I'm not a fan of pirated software, especially on great work such as Fallout so there's no need for answers with prejudice. Anyways, I tried what you suggested too and it didn't do the trick either.

Yet a different solution solved the problem: modification of the f2res.ini file to the lowest possible settings for color bits (16 bits) and resolution (800x600) suitable for the Radeon. Thanks to all who tried to find an answer to the problem.
