[F3 Exercise Number 1] Fixing Little Lamplight

Cobra Commander

Water Chip? Been There, Done That
Let´s have some fun.

In this first exercise NMA will (try) fix Little Lamplight. I started:

1) Origin: HH Showed how a bunch of children can survive "alone." This story that their teachers died and blablabla is stupid. Instead, someone like the Survivalist could have helped them in the beginning.

2) Defense against raiders and wildlife: Simple. Put some robots there. They were there before war. Done.

3) Defense against Supermutants: trick. Let´s say: FEV dont work in children, so they prefer to wait then go to Big Town.

4) Children ressuply: There´s that history that the children come from Big Town. Stupid. Staving parents from the wasteland handing their babies over to them because safety is best.

5) Food: A water table that is not contaminated by radiation (for reasons? Dont know if radiation penetrates deep into the soil.) Passes through there. This allows agriculture and also the domestication of mole rats.

6) government: There´s a mayor there. But a bunch of kids agreeing with each other? It would be better if the robots acted as tutors for them.

Better now? Does anyone add anything else?

Here's how I fixed it in my tabletop game:

"Little Lamplight is a collection of 100 year old mutants who appear to be children. The radiation didn't turn them into ghouls but they are for all intents and purposes, frozen in their present forms. Their apparent immortality is possibly influenced by the FEV experiments going on nearby with the Super Mutants beside them. The player characters who assume the LL are innocent should be warned they have a treaty with the Super Mutants who live beside them and if they don't befriend the locals, will be turned over to them for execution."

To adhere 100% to lore it'd be best to remove it entirely tbh.

Or we could have them be ghouls. Ask ourselves the question if a child has be 8 for 200 years is he really a child?

Or have them be part of a breeding program that the SM (or a similar creature, maybe we could replace them with the failed FEV expirement) that they use to keep their numbers up. They think becoming a SM is just part of growing up... Also the leader of the SMs could be the one to task you to retrieve his "livestock" from paradise falls and in return you get access to vault 87.

You could also simply say they all suffer a condition which makes them look like children. There's some in RL.

I'm going to take ideas from a Vault that was meant to be in Van Buren;

So first of all, it's a Vault where the inhabits were children, a sort of Lord of the Flies kind of thing. We have evidence of factions at war over the years as they try to substain themselves. We know that killing was involved as skelletons are just thrown into a big room in a pile "like they just left the corpses rooting over the years".

The defence is of course the Vault door and it isn't part of the main quest.
People you meet in the Wastes say they come from this Vault and there are two missions in particular.
One is where you help a president of the Vault. At the end, the losing nominee "Disappears".

The second is a nod to the original Fallout where you have to help fix their Water Chip.

There, I just made Little Lamplight darker...

Well, removing it entirelly would be for the best.

- First game in the entire series in which you can't kill children. (a lot of further points are related to it)
- Not related with LL, but at the same time, they force you to become a children and kill adult. So adults can't kill children but it is perfectly OK for a child to kill adult ? Make up your mind guys.
- So, at the same time, first game in the series in which you are forced to deal with children, as part of the MAIN quest. So you can't ignore them if you want to. You HAVE to deal with them. But not lethally. So they force you to aknowledge that you can't interact with them the way you want.
- You are forced to do job for them, and have to spend even more time with them.
- While you are forced to work for them, they treat you like utter shit and there is nothing you can do about it. You can't kill them, you can't ignore them, you can't refuse to work for them, and you have to endure being treated like shit by characters your protagonist could easily get rid of, by the scores.
- So, every attempt at roleplaying into your character shoes are thrown into the window.
- Then, they are supposed to be children there since the great war, 200 years ago.
- Those children are able to kick out teenagers, like it is not a big deal.
- They can sustain themselves and are conveniently ignored by raiders, super-mutants, slavers, robots, deathclaws and every critter that roam all around the Capital Wasteland.

Best way to handle them would be to entirelly remove them, and have the player character seek for an access card in another location to open vault 87. (or seek for the only radiation suit that allow to sustain all the rads there.)

I actually hate how hypocritical Bethesda were with the whole killing children thing.

Okay, you want to stop people from killing children, fine, I can understand it. You don't want to drum up bad press with reactionary news outlets and Mums who don't care about context. Fine.

Yet you can technically kill children by proxy.
Blowing up Megaton is fine, making the audience think there's underage sex is fine and making kids slaves is fine.

I don't think these aspects where fully checked through with Bethesda. Which is funny as the only stuff that was drummed up was the drugs and fat boy.

(Also the Megaton quest was cut from the Japanese release, while I get why, it is baffling seeing as the whole game is about Nuclear War).

Well, IMHO, the "charm" of apocalyptic and post apocalyptic theme is the societal collapse: an excellent plot device for everything from immoral to amoral, lawlessness and disorder, daily routine of total fuck-ups. In short, how low can human be.

If you are making lots of red tape on that, you are better-off not making a post apocalyptic theme story at all.

Here's my little idea.

LL seems to be entirely populated by children.

Replace the mutants in Vault 87 with ghoulish, but neutral mutants.

They infect teenagers just before they reach adulthood, but cannot infect adults or kids.

Infected people turn into more of the mutants, who are sterile.

Probably a little bit politically incorrect, but how about the FEV make most (not all) people in LL will grow fast but die fast. Most will reached puberty by 13 but usually dead before 16. So they get married early and die early.

And, as resources in LL are scared, Those lucky few who still alive after 16, are considered strong enough and have to ventured out into wasteland to free-up resources for the rest.

In the original game, they probably reproduce normally, even though the game acts like they're in the neverland, but the real question is what do they eat?
In-game explanation: they're eating mushrooms from the walls of the cave. Gotta love bethesda's writing.
Also, i gotta find this cave and live there.

You need to have a chat with the slavers of Paradise Falls. =)

Revenge is a dish best served cold.

Why not have it be a thing built by Super Mutants? They abduct children from the wasteland (perhaps they extort a town nearby,) raise the kids to adulthood, then infect the adults with FEV to make more mutants?

Hehe, pretty low score for f2 there hã? =p

Is my second favorite, where NV is at the top.

About your post, yeah, that will solve everything, actually.
