Fallout 1 AND 2 "self-closing" to desktop after st

First time out of the vault
Hey all, I've browsed the forums, but my search-fu on anything but google is horrid, and i've read the sticky. I have Fallout and Fallout 2 I got off Amazon packaged in the "Fallout Radioactive" compilation box.

Both installed just fine (Fallout 1 needed compatibility mode to be installed.) but both of them crash to the desktop (no error messages, no blue screens. They just close.) I start them up, and the "Please Stand By" screen flashes for about a half of a second, then they just close.

I've tried putting them in compatibility mode, i've tried disabling visual themes, i've tried reinstalling, and they are currently installed in humongous size install, and they always close.

I've also tried Killaps patch that fixes bugs, (supposedly) but that did not work. Anyone have any ideas what I could do?

System Specs:

Windows XP Home Edition
Pentium 4 1.6 MHz
2.0 Gigs RAM
40 gigs free disc space
Radeon 9250 graphics card
Mad Dog 2 audio card

There is no explanation why Fallout crashes sometimes. My FO1 copy refused to play any sound, no matter how I tried to make it, but after installing it on large (80 mb) install it works just fine. Dunno why.

Sounds like it clashes with another bit of software. Try closing off all non-essential programs when running Fallout. Also, make sure all your drivers are updates. Also, doing a full install could help.

Alright, i've tried disabling all running programs via End Task, (except for the essential stuff) and it still won't startup past the millisecond "Please Stand By" screen.

Also, I went in and tried every size install, from small to humongous, and none of them were any different.

Have you tried disabling hardware acceleration for sound and/or video?

I'm having this same exact problem, except it only happens with F1. F2 works just fine, even before patches and without compatibility mode :wtf:. I've tried everything suggested in this thread to try to fix F1 (including disabling hardware acceleration) with no results. Sucks because I wanted to play both games in order.

Intel Core 2 Duo E6750
Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT
2 GB RAM
Windows XP Pro SP2

I remember reading that the Humugous Instalation causes the game to crash.
It happened to me a few times.

Fallout was made for my pc...
:D
still rocking a 16 meg video card, 18 gig PC from 1999
