It Wandered In From the Wastes

I'm playing the version of Fallout 1 released by Good Old Games, which is actually the UK childless version of the game. (For Fallout 2 apparently they used the US one which has children.)
When I first started I didn't realise, and I patched the game with various unoffical patches and fixes and so on. TeamX patch I think, x, high res patch, Timeslip's engine tweaks, NPC patch... truth be told I actually can't remember which ones I have installed, but its a lot and they seem to be working fine together without any problems.
Anyway, having realised there are no children, I am now using Skynet's children patch for Fallout 1. But I notice it has a new falloutw.exe file in it, while was a file that was already replaced by one of the unofficial patches I installed.
If I use the falloutw file from the children patch my game is no longer high resolution. It appears that I can use the old high resolution falloutw file and still see children running around in the game, so it would seem the correct solution is to just use the children patch's data files and not the executable file.
One thing concerns me though... when I go to try to speak to a child running around in the first village, it brings up a talking head box but they have nothing to say except for "Hello," and I can't barter with them. Is that all that is supposed to happen? Or am I missing out on some features of the game thanks to not using the right falloutw.exe file?
Other adult NPCs that have nothing interesting to say just have a bit of float text when you try to talk to them, so it seems weird that children launch the actual dialog window thing, yet have nothing to say except for Hello.
So, just checking that's normal.
If not, I guess I'll have to settle for a low resolution Fallout.
