Fallout 1: Release variety analysis

Ok files sent, Mine is an english only version (I think), bought in Australia that had an electronic manual only.

Recieved. Yes, nothing exotic. The only difference between yours and mine is removed DirectX installer. That's why validator have not recognized the disk. Everything else is the same.

Hello there!

I've some question I like to ask in order to save time.

My question concerns the diffrent Fallout 2 Versions:

1. Version I've is the dual jewel case (us version).

2. Version I've is the german resale version

3. Version I've is the - I think so - the white Version (german) is a box containing Fallout I and II - I think. It's possible that it just contains Fallout 2

My question is, do you need a validation of these versions or do you already have the validations of theme?

the diffrent Fallout 2 Versions
Err... As it mentioned in the topic title we are interested in the Fallout 1 only. Validator will not give any useful results if you feed it with a Fallout 2 disk. :)
And unfortunately I identify different disks by their MD5 sums. So I can't definetly say wich one is tested already and which is not just by your description.

1. Most probably tested but it's unsure.
2. If it's Fallout 2 then there is no need to test it. Otherwise - untested.
3. If thers is Fallout 1 in that package then it's surely untested. And does 'white' means something special like 'low violence'? Or it's just a colour of the box?

Note also that parsing german disk would produce a large result.dat up to 200Mb.

I'm sorry because I meant fallout 1.

Yes, I got two Version of it. The result from one of them I'll post tomorrow.

The white edition is, a release from a label called "white" which is sort of a discounter.

I'll post the results if they get to big, I'll upload them by rapidshare or megaupload, okay?

And thanks for the reply

Understood. Such a discount system is not widespread in my country. So I'm just not familar with it.

That's ok. But I can't download from megaupload at all. So let it be rapidshare and depositfiles instead if the file gets really big.

Thanks for the efforts.

Yes. On the first look it's seems just like my very first disk with the game. But do you mind if I still ask you in the future to test your disk just for Win98 validator tetsting purposes?

Surely.

Hello here is the result for the first of my two Fallout 1 Versions.

The one I've checked was the dual case version and I get a result.txt.

Here is the contens of it: "FALLOUT Version 1.1 (09 Nov 1999) [US] "

So other Version I'll send in next monday because it's at home and I'm for studying.

I hope it helps at all.

FALLOUT Version 1.1 (09 Nov 1999) [US]
So, this is nothing special. Common US release with integrated patch 1.1.

I hope it helps at all.
German version could be interesting. Especially the engine and some non-dialogue MSGs.

I'll be waitng. :)

That's good. But you will have to wait until weekend or monday next week because I'm on studying.

greetings

Just registered, just for this :D

I've got the Fallout Collection White Label release, which contains Fallout 1 and 2 + tactics, on one DVD. The validator doesn't seem to work with this one. The validator just flashes for a moment, and I think it says that it didn't find the CD.

Hi, Makelele. I think, validator fails to detect CD because it expects to have all the main data files in th root directiry of the disk. You can override the default path manually. Open your CD and find a folder where Fallout critter.dat and master.dat reside. Then run the validator specfying full pathname to that folder at the command line. Like this: validate.cmd E:\InstallerData\Fallout\
Note that trailing backslash in the pathname is mandatory!
There is still probability that you will not find DAT-files at all. In that case make lagerst possible installation of the game and run validator specifyng installation directory as an argumemt. This at least will allow to check data files contents.

The first approach creates a Result.dat (550 MB  ) and log.dat, but it complains during the process that it can't find:

AUTORUN
DATA
PATCH
PROGRAM

There also doesn't seem to be any other .dat files in the folder than setup.dat. There's only a couple of .cab files, (data1, data2, and data3, out of which data2 is 550 MB and the rest are only about 300 KB), and others that I have no idea about what they are.

The last approach doesn't seem to work. The validator complains that the folder is empty or does not exist, even if I checked the path many times, even using the damn command prompt to access the folder.

I just ran the validator against my very old Fallout CD. The validator generated a "result.txt" file with the following contents:
Code:
FALLOUT Version 1.0 (29 Sep 1997) [US]

So is this version compatible with the TeamX patches? I'd like to thank TeamX for continuing to improve one of the best PC games of all time. Please keep up the work on patching Fallout!

I just ran the validator, and it pumped out a logs.dat, a result.dat (of 383MB) and a result.txt. My Fallout CD is one I downloaded from the Internet  The validator said it did not find the PATCH file.

Where shall I send the results, and do I have to send the result.dat?

So is this version compatible with the TeamX patches?
Yes, of course. It's the most common release and it's completely supported.

Magnus
I've answered via PM.

I still need some info on the GOG release of the game. If some volunteer could parse his distribution with the validator and send me the result, work on the semi-official patch 1.2.1 could speed up. ;)

Y'know, I'd do this, except I know for a fact that mine's one of the ordinary, early release versions. Even has the original screen saver, which I use on all my boxes. :D
