War, war never changes. The cult line which is said by Ron Pearlman in the beginning of every Fallout game showing how the war ruined the lives of billions of people and still continue to do so.People always wondered how will the life be after an apocalypse, will the human society prevail and what challenges will be present if the human kind still exists after apocalypse. These questions helped Fallout to become one of the best RPG franchise of all time.
Developed by Black Isle Studio and published by Interplay Interactive in 1997, Fallout marked the beginning of an internationally known series. Being the spiritual successor to the 1988 published Wasteland, Fallout had won many awards and found a loyal fan base and even though it didn’t sold so well it is one of the best games ever made.
Fallout is set in 2161, in Southern California almost 100 years after a big global nuclear war in 2077 which almost destroyed the whole world. As a result of the war the human society collapsed, radiation was everywhere and small part of the humans could live in Vaults which sheltered them from the dark and cruel wasteland. The game starts with a guy who is exiting a cave in a search of a water chip and is wearing a dark blue suit which has the number 13 on it’s back. You’ve been living in a vault whose water chip was broken and so the overseer sent you on a quest for finding another one before the water reserves run out. You are first time leaving your vault, for the first time you see sunlight, for the first time you are on your own. In your journey you will encounter super mutants, ghouls(which are zombie like creatures), mutated animals, insects, traders and raiders.
Fallout gameplay is it’s main selling point. When the game first come out it was a refreshing experience in a genre filled with medieval/J.R.R Tolkien books based games. Fallout was true to it’s genre featuring a lot of option for your character design including choosing from 7 attributes(strength, perception, endurance, charisma, intelligence, agility and luck) 18 skills(which are affected by the attributes), and 16 traits ( which you can only choose 2 at the character creation). Later in the game you also would be able to choose perks, which are available after every 3 levels. Based on your skills and attributes you will get different options while talking to somebody. Having high speech skill will usually help you persuade other people, while having a really low intelligence would lead to your character only saying really simple words during conversations and even some non playing character would talk to your character like he is a child. In Fallout you can also choose how will the story continue. The weapons in fallout depends a lot on your skills and attributes. Having high strength will allow you to equip every weapon while having a high percent in melee or any other weapon related skill will result in you doing higher damage with that particular weapon type. The number of weapons in fallout isn’t that big but it is enough in order to properly enjoy your journey in the wasteland. While the number of weapons is adequate, armors on the other side are very few and after some time your character might becoming boring to play, but that really shouldn’t discourage you from playing the game until the end.
Wandering through the wasteland you will be able to enjoy the soundtrack this game provides. The music is one of the things that really immerses you in the wasteland. The song “Maybe” which is performed by Ink Spots and its played on the beginning and the end of the game, really fits the atmosphere of Fallout.
In order to run this on modern PC you will need to use DosBox, or simply buy it from gog.com, which has DosBox included with your game, if you don’t want any hassle making the game work. You will still encounter a few bugs here and there even but none of them are game breaking.
Although Fallout is a game which is set in a world where everything is sad and depressing it can still be fun and satisfying experience. You will find a lot of easter eggs from popular culture of the 50s. During talking to some of the non playing character you might find some dark humor which sometimes can definitely make you laugh.
Fallout is a game that will definitely amaze you if you are a fan of turn-based rpgs. Even if you are not the great gameplay, the character creation, the immersive atmosphere will definitely provide you with a lot of fun while you are enjoying the great world of Fallout.
P.S. I recently started thinking of opening a website about reviewing pc games and mods, and if anyone wants to join me pm me.
