Fallout (1) - Running it on vista and other questions

Vault Senior Citizen
Hello!

Im left a little unsure if this is the right place for this but here goes:

I recently acquired Fallout 1 after playing the sequel alot in the past 10~ years.

Im reading articles about the water chip timer and the mutant timer and im left a bit unsure if i want to get into the game now.

Do these time restraints not cause "stress" and so forth? limit exploration and all sorts of negative things?

Can someone with more experience tell me a little about the game and why i should definetly try it?

Appreciated!

edit:
Completely forgot the other questions, how does it work on vista? What patches exist for the game?

You shouldn't worry too much about the time restraints. If you don't go exploring the wasteland like a raving lunatic (i.e. scout the wasteland for months on end without a certain goal), you won't run out of time. Plus: there is a way (in the game) to enlarge the time limit. I rarely use up the original time-limit, by the way, and I still manage to do pretty much everything in the game.

Because it's Fallout, the first and basically the best game in the series so far. It's the game that started it all, and even though it still had some design flaws (barter, inventory, npc's blocking your way...), you will fall in love with it.

The story is better than FO2's story, but there are less quests and there is generally less to do. Still: play it. Now. And then decide for yourself what you think of it.

Read stickies. I don't think there are any serious problems running FO on Vista, though, but I wouldn't know. I'm still XP.
Definitely patch it, though, and if you have a version that doesn't feature children, use the children patch. See the download section under FO1 for all that stuff.

I believe that the patched (1.2) version doesn't have a time limit for the mutants, just so you know...

any chance of running it in windowed mode?

Also, i get a screen filling black in shady sands constantly that goes away partially by wiping around with the cursor. Anyone else having this problem?

I Don't think it's too much to worry about, it happens to me in the den in fo2. just go onto the pip-boy and back and it should be gone... :D

I'm a few days late here, but it sounds as if it is a video card error, it could possibly be resolved by going to the manufacturers website and getting your latest drivers for the card.

Fallout One is a great game regardless of the time limit issue, I have managed to play the game over and over and the time issue never really bothers me other than the occasion that I look at my pip boy and go "Hey, I have 123 days to get the water chip, O boy!". I'm sure you've realized by now it's still fun to play. xD

Question!

Hello, i would like to ask that if anyone has any idea of the system recommendations of Fallout 3?

You're better off asking at the Beth forums.

I would imagine similar req's as Oblivion, if not a big higher.

Black screen is a fairly common problem.
I used to get it quite often on XP but haven't noticed it yet on Vista.
Seems to just happen randomly in any town, another problem is the colours messing up a bit.
Read the stickies in the tech. forum.
