Fallout 2, New Game - Diplomat/Fighter

Cycloptis

First time out of the vault
Well first off, I DID use the search function with "beginner" and "new game," and I can't really find any threads that pertain to this sort of character. I have also read the sticky. So, please don't kill me.

This will be the first time I'll be playing all the way through Fallout 2. I've got it patched with no mods and I've already done a bit with another character; but, I would like to have a well prepared character for this "first" time through. As much as I trust my decisions, I don't really know what skills may be useless or unbalanced.

So I've decided on a diplomat character, first and foremost, who can get as many dialogue options available while being able to take on a fight. I would assume Intelligence would be the key statistic to this, along with Charisma and some Perception? I did play through Fallout 1 years ago, but at this point (and actually, never was) proficient with the nuances of the SPECIAL system.

No one's going to kill you for this. However, it is becoming really predictable (and thus repetitive) to have to read what newcomers usually write. It always starts with something like "Please don't ban me, I DID so use the search function" and it is usually followed by a statement à la "but alas, poor old me, I was not able to find anything relevant". You are also not the first one to end such a statement with a sentimental . I find this highly amusing and entertaining ... in a certain way.

One: a question like yours has been asked and answered a million times. Using the search function the way it is meant to be used would have given you all the information you ever needed.

Two: if we don't answer something along the lines of "just make your own character and do your utmost best to get him to the end of the game 'cause that's the whole point of a game like FO/FO2: roleplaying", we'll answer something along the lines of "there's this guy called Per Jorner and he wrote a wonderful and nearly ultimate guide to the world of FO2, a book of truth and wisdom more than 200 pages thick, and you can find a link to that guide if you search this forum".

Three: FO2 is so big, that a Jack-of-all-trades is perfectly feasible. Pick Small Guns, Speech and Lockpick and nothing bad can possibly happen to you. Pick a high Intelligence 'cause it'll give you lots of skill points to spend. Charisma let's you pick followers (2 pts per follower), so choose wisely. And put lots of points in Agility or else you will be a sissy on the battlefield.

Four: I'm pretty tired. I'm going to have some beers now and go to bed.

Cheers!

Well, that wasn't so bad. Although I will find this guide.

So for every two points of Charisma you can have a party member. So there is a limit to them? Any suggestion on companions?
