Fallout 2 pick-up items bug

First time out of the vault
Hi.
I started playing Fallout 2 not long ago, and all went great until this mission against Tyler's gang in The Den. After killing Marc with Lara's gang, it's not possible to pick up his items. I understand that there's a known bug that occasionally interferes with the game, but I wanted to know if there's a way to pick up those items despite it. If not, do you recommend installing the unofficial patch or the restoration project? Will I have to start my game again from the beginning?

I recommend installing the restoration project from the resources section since I had very few technical issues with it (besides the 2 crashes), unlike the vanilla Fallout 2 Steam version, where it would constantly stutter and crash.

Thanks for your answer. Do you know if installing it will prevent me from loading my save game, and I'll have to start the game over again?

I am not sure, but I am going to recommend you start over if using the previous save isn't possible, because I find it essential to play Fallout 2 with project restoration to get the full experience.

Unofficial patch isn't necessary since project restoration already includes patches or replaces the unofficial patch.

Last question - I know the Sfall is already installed on the restoration project, but might you know how to make it work like in Fallout 1 Sfall?
I mean, not only highlight items you can pick up in yellow, but full containers in blue, which, after emptying them, become white?

Fallout 1 sfall by Crafty is a separate thing not related to official sfall branch, however the highlighting features you speak about can be configured in an additional combo mod called fo2tweaks..

you need to aquire the mod, unpack it to mods folder of your fo2 game, add fo2tweaks.dat to "mods-order" file within the "mods" folder and configure fo2tweaks.ini . there are other features in there that you may consider as cheating, so enable/ disable them at your desire.. the fo2tweaks highlighting mod is fully configurable you may change any color to your desire..

just remember you need to disable the highlighting mod in sfall-mods.ini as it will overwrite the one from fo2tweaks.

Thank you for the reply, but before I installed the Restoration Project, it worked fine without the fo2tweaks. I don't know how it was possible about a year ago, cause as much as I tried doing it now, I am not able to do it again. I tried to search for it in the fo2tweaks, as you suggested, but didn't find those capabilities. I had a weight display to know how much I can carry, and items were highlighted using the left shift key. But not only items, but also containers and corpses. The colors changed from blue, before I searched in them, to yellow, after I searched in them and left items in, and grey, if I picked up all the items and left them empty. Is there any chance you know how I can do it again?

You were using crafty's sfall, it has weight display in the inventory and the blue/grey highlighting. The sourceforge sfall can highlight containers and whatnot, but the "greyed out" functionality is not there.

the freeweight mod of NPC and spaceleft for containers is particualrily a Crafty's sfall thing.. the good news is Lexx made such a mod for Fallout EtTu.. i bet if you bug him long enaugh, loud enaugh, and often enaugh ( pun intended), He'll make a standalone mod out of it, so it can be used in any fallout 2 based game..

Thank you, but how can I approach him?
Anyway, I'm still stuck with this. I can't believe I already had those settings somehow, but uninstalled the game for RP... Hope it's worth it.
I have been using Gemini a lot for days now, and it had some ideas about what might be wrong, but we didn't find what the problem is. Also added FreeWeightDisplay=1 to both ddraw.ini and sfall-mods.ini without any change. You might have a suggestion?

sweet jesus..

don't tell me that you actually expected your said additions to work...

if something is in ddraw.ini or sfall-mods.ini it actually has to be supported by ddraw.dll that sits in fallout2 folder.. now look we are trying to explain it to you as politely as we can the Crafty's sfall a.k.a ddraw.dll sfall-mods.ini and ddraw.ini are different from the ddraw.dll sfall-mods.ini and ddraw.ini that come with RP.. I don't know how to explain it more easily to you.. they differ in size in code in functions they can perform, and they are made by totally different people.. so just adding a line of text isn't going to change a thing.. actually switching back to crafty's ddraw.dll may break your playthrough, since the game is based on some functions that Crafty's sfall may not have..
Crafty's sfall is very old and not supported anymore i think.. so it's best to just not use it and suplement your needs with other mods..

as i said fo2tweaks fully supports color changes in highlighting mod, and in addition also highlights all manholes ladders stairs etc stuff you normally woudn't see highlighted, so it's a superior version in comparison to Crafty's.. the freeweight mod can be made standalone.. just go to EtTu thread ( i think it's been pinned lately) and ask Lexx if he'd do that, if not in et tu thread you could also PM him, though i'm not sure if he does respond to PM..

No, you've got me wrong. I stopped using Crafty's Sfall since you told me that. GOG's installation of the game comes with Sfall 4.4.5 (at least now, I think it might be different a year ago or so), and I tried editing those files with FreeWeightDisplay=1 in this version, and tried again after I updated to 4.4.7. while neither of the versions didn't operated this function.

now come on.. i Said that editing ddraw.ini ( other inis as well) and adding FreeWeightDisplay=1 won't do jack sh1t right? so why are you saying you did this and claim i understood you wrong?

As I said use Lexx's mod for that, editing ddraw.ini or other ini won't matter since that function isn't coded into ddraw.dll ( yes crafty's ddraw.dll had this built in, but official sfall and crafty's sfall are two totally separate things totally not related to each other)

You're right, I should have acted as you suggested, and I did mostly, except for that. It's just that I installed the game a year ago, and until I reinstalled it two weeks ago, I had those functions without any other mods added except Sfall...
