Do you have the latest version of directx (9.0c)? Does changing SAFER_DISPLAY_LIST to 1 in f2_res.ini (in your main F2 directory) do anything?

Thanks for answering. Your advice didn't help, unfortunately (and I know why - my bad, I'm using DX11 anyway), however, I was able to finally get the program running by changing the number of colours in the f2_res.ini to 16-bit manually.
Though after starting the game the above value did reset itself to 8-bit. In the f2_res. ini too. Weird. The game still works anyway:).
Maybe it can help someone having the same problem.
Thanks once more for your enormous work on the game, Killap.

Anyone having issues downlad directx web setup and it will install missing files from older versions like directx 9 since they are not all there in directx 11 - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED even if you don't expirience problems

Edit ddraw.ini in Fallout folder and find "BackgroundKeyboard=0" and set it to 1 and if that doesn't do it change "BackgroundMouse=0" to 1 too. This will certeanly fix failure to initialize input devices error.

After changing these in ddraw.ini you might encounter some memory read error which you will fix by downloading directx as explained above.

Do not install Fallout in Program Files if you are running Windows Vista/7 as this creates problems with UAC. Install in custom folder like C:\Fallout 2\

What's with the fallout.exe icon appearing as a photograph of a bearded head with glasses? The small icon is the normal Vault Boy icon, but the larger version of the icon that is called when I create a shortcut on my desktop is someone who looks like Newman from Seinfeld.

I never saw that before; is it something that was done in the RP2.0?

(FWIW, I'm running Windows 7 x64, whereas my prior play-throughs of Fallout were under WinXP and, presumably, Win98).

This is because icon is larger. Simply download icon from here

Ok, I'm getting a similar error to one earlier in the thread but the solution posted didn't work.

I'm running Win 7 x64 on a quad core with dual monitors.

I make a fresh install of FO2, (run it and it plays fine), install the RP, run, watch the intro videos (sometimes in the right colour but occasionally with graphical errors) and get this error.

Now I first installed FO2 to a different directory, no dice. I install the latest version of DirectX, that didn't fix it. I install in the normal directory: c:\programs files\black isle ... but this didn't solve the problem.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

(should be noted that my fresh install is only to v1.01 of FO2 or the like; I try to run the official patcher but it says its not compatible with a 64bit system :S. However, on installing the RP it updates to v1.20 no problem (for however brief i can see the menu screen)

Try downloading directx in a way noted above. That fixed my error that was very similar to yours.

Well, amusingly all it took to fix it was by setting the compatibility mode to Vista Service Pack 2. Not a problem.

Only a completely different note:

I started playing as a Jinxed Luck 10 char and encountered Kaga shortly after leaving Arroyo. He attacked me and critically missed. He remained standing, however, I was able to use the hand to take all of his stuff (5 spears, a super stim and 1000 gold: very useful but rather game bending). Thought it was odd considering he wasn't knocked out.

@SAN FRANCISCO,
me(+sulik+vic+cassidy+myron) chatted with LoPan, challenge him to fight in the ring one on one. my unarmed skill was lower than 70%, and lousy at hitting and missing alot. i hit and run until LoPan cornered me at the topleft corner.. i was losing bad. and suddenly myron with his plasma pistol shot LoPan!!! I followup with crittical punch and LoPan was on the floor. Last punch to the head killed him... Shi was not hostile at all.. received +karma, +xp.. Is this a bug? or Myron finally become useful. :) though my luck was 8,

@San Francisco, Hubologist base...
NPC will not follow you.. they like to hang out nearby entrance... is this a bug? Anyway,Kudos to the makeover, more items to loot, 666 coins haha... hubology=satanic.

@SF Chinatown, Nice shelves/safe at Dragon shop, lockers..
After killing LoPan. getting "Liked" reputation in SF, Power Armor is cheaper. You can steal from all the guards and you will only make them hostile after u failed to steal 3 times... the first 2 times you fail to steal, u get a red warning floating text. I was stealing my way to buy a Power armour for my npc.. Is this intentional or a bug/exploit?

@SF Tanker, Nice makeover?... the docks have more wooden look compared to before.. i think.. also:you can steal m72 gauss (weapon+ammo) for free

I still recommend downloading missing files from older versions of directx.

Tribesman guarding entrance to village near the obelisk at the first screen of the game if attacked has floating text "I will dishonor your tribe" or "Give up now and we will not eat your heart" - Isn't he from the same tribe as you? And is he canibal? I know this is nothing important just wanted to note it.

Bug
I'm running with Update 2b (2.0.2b) installed, and still can't talk to Farrell AFTER the toilet is blown up.

Since pre & post crap-covered-Modoc use different maps, I'm guessing the issue with the carpet has only been addressed on the first of these maps.

Minor Bug
There's still a number of children labled "Little Girl" who are still using the standard child model - Ghost Farm has a few of these.

i get the error
wmAreaInit:: Error Loading Cities!

im using wine in ubuntu, fallout 2 works just fine without the patch but when i install the patch i get that error.

Just a guess but it might be related to sfall needing latest DirectX 9c drivers. Both Killap's patch and RP use it.

I tried it with out sfall, still doesnt work

I found a bug that's left over from 1.2. When in Arroyo, if I go to my PipBoy's automap, Arroyo's maps have three "Desert" maps on the bottom. The first two are simply blank (I haven't left yet, so maybe they're yet to be filled in), but the third one crashes to the desktop.

Too few random encounters

I just walked from Arroyo to Klamath without a single random encounter. I thought that was odd, so I walked around some more. I eventually hit a random encounter, but I had walked a distance equivalent to 8-10 times the distance between Arroyo and Klamath before it happened.

I thought this issue had been addressed already, but I'm only seeing discussion of map speed. The map is moving at a reasonable speed (maybe a little bit slowly), but random encounters are exceedingly rare.

How can I become a citizen from Vault City? I destroyed the powerplant (Gecko), but when I talked with Lynette, her face turns red like a tomatoe, and she kick my ass out of Vault City. :help:
After that, I loaded the game and selected a dialogue option to leave before she kill me/kick out of the city, so I can talk with her again when she calm down.
After that, I did some quests and visited other cities.
When I decided to return to VC, guess what happened?
If this wasn't bad enough, now I don't even have the option to talk with her about Gecko.

MODOC - davin's room have girlies poster. shouldn't it be some gay poster? foreboding clue for new fallout2 players..
I don’t think there is any indications that Davin is gay when you first meet him (if anything its implied his been messing with the animals), its only through the soft touch of your hands and the gentle kisses on his neck is he encouraged to experiment, maybe you converted him from his attraction to women (and secretly his sister)…

This is the man responsible for all of your Fallout orgasms. Tim Cain was the one who first conceived the game and built the team that finally made it all happen…thank you Tim.:notworthy:

Not for me, I died quite a lot of times already. When I get Power Armor+Gauss Rifle these poor bastards will suffer.

I have a 'lil bit funny problem. :>

When I try to save the game, I get the message that it's impossible to save the game. Someone has a clue, why that is?

I ran into this problem myself. With a clean install, I could save games, but after installing the restoration project, I got the error. I looked on the Wiki and noticed it said the F2RP supports minimal and humongous installations and I had used large. I uninstalled F2 and reinstalled as humongous and the problem went away.

I also have another bug report:
If you do the orphanage quest, and tell with Jonny after the construction is already completed (with the Mom's sign, and with the poor childrens living in the house) and say to him that now he can live there, when you visit the area again, the place is completely DESERTED, I mean, REALY, there are no people in the whole area!

Please killap, fix this.

I mentioned this previously in a thread, but got no response. (FO2 Engine Tweaks). Hopefully the people who understand the finer points involving the game engine will have a look. (S.O.S – Timeslip – Nirran)… :)
I have done some modding of maps with the Fallout mapper. It is obvious to anyone who has used it extensively that the mapper and hence the games engine has more than its fair share of flaws. One critical problem deals with the number of animated objects (Animate Forever script), or critters, each map (including all of the elevations) can animate at one time. The limit is 20. Therefore if you have for instance 18 animated scenery pieces on a map, a maximum of 2 further critters will be able to animate themselves - i.e. walk, scratch, fumble, etc. The rest will remain frozen to the floor, including NPC’s, even if the PC travels over the map any NPC’s over the 20 limit will remain frozen in the one spot (this excludes combat). The critters will take it in turns to cycle through their animations. Normally this wouldn’t be considered a serious problem, but in RP 2.0 there has been a major rebuild of all the maps. I have no knowledge of programming, scripting, etc, this might be a simple case of adjusting caching, but can you please have a look into the mapper and see if you can overcome this problem.

I had this bug, but when I came back for the car, the orphanage was back along with all the NPCs. Not sure where along it decided to fix itself, but that's probably the reason it was never noticed originally.
