Fallout 2 (Steam): sfall issues.

First time out of the vault
Hi all,

After doing the standard forum searching/googling I haven't been able to find an answer to my problem, so hopefully you guys can help D:

I downloaded the Fallout Trilogy via Steam, which came with the sfall patch. No rainbow colors, but cutscenes are still extremely buggy (Have a weird "smear" effect to them)

Anyway, I open up the sfall.ini file, which says that dx9 mode will cause that. Do some googling, and find out that the version of sfall that steam included with it is extremely out of date (The .ini file doesn't have a version number, the .dll properties say 1.28.1.0) . Thinking "Oh, well I just need to get the latest version", I download it and paste it into the game's folder. Doesn't work, gives the "Incompatible version of Fallout" error.(The title screen gives Fallout 2's version as 1.02.25) More googling tells me that the newest version of sfall is deliberately incompatible with Steam.

In short: Is there a way around this, or should I just consider it a bad purchase and get the game elsewhere? (Was going to simply try to download a version of sfall which fixed the problem, but I can't find any version besides the newest one) At this point, it's really a "I paid for this and want to get it to work" type of thing.

nah, any version of sfall newer than 2.1 is perfectly compatible with steam again. What was the exact error? It'll always give more information than just 'incompatible version of fallout'.

If it was a crc or exe size error, then it's probably the steam drm that they wrap all of their exe's in. You can get around that by just replacing the fallout2.exe that steam provide with the standard US one.

Ah okay.

Yeah, the exact error message is:

"You're trying to use sfall with an incompatible version of fallout. Was expecting 'Fallout 2 v1.02 US'. fallout2.exe was an unexpected size. Expected 0x122800 but got 0x184200."

I'll try replacing the .exe and see if that works. Thanks for the help :3

How exactly do you replace a .exe file? I would really appreciate a response because this is breaking my head.

I'm also having trouble with the Steam version (v1.02.25) of Fallout 2, specifically that the Hi-Res Patch states that it is an incompatible version of Fallout 2.

"An unsupported version of Fallout 2 was detected!"

Fixes?

For those guys who haven't figured out how to replace the fallout2.exe file:

1. Grab the official US patch 1.02 here: http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/dload.php?action=file&file_id=82
2. Unpack it. If you don't have any archiver installed by any chance, this open source program worked fine: http://www.7-zip.org/
3. There's fallout2.exe in the unpacked archive. Put this file in your Fallout2 installation directory and you should be fine.
