Fallout 2 weird bug/companion help?

Celicni

First time out of the vault
Hi, I've registered here to ask some questions, and a certain site wasn't being very helpful (seeing as everyone's about fallout 3 and NV and I heard the community here tends to prefer the first 2 games more).
1)My companions aren't moving. At all. They engage in combat, but only if they are close.
2)Had a very weird thing happen in broken hills. For details see this: I am unable to post the link for some reason...meh...basically the game was freezing every 20s, then I can move for 2s then it freezes completely again. It happened in the mines of broken hills and eastern section, western section was fine. And if I went into combat mode everything ran smoothly, except when sulik used SMG burst (and for the second time onward, first round was fine).
3)Vic just died after I massacred that first casino in new reno, and I think I want to go and recruit cassidy instead of him now. I had vic using a shotgun, what should I give to cassidy?
^Fallout 2.
Edit: Oh and 4) If I raise my stats with buffout, will I be able to pass the golden globe check?

This belongs in the Gameplay help section, not here. Also, on top of not being about gameplay or bug related discussion, the General Gaming and Hardware section is for NON-Fallout related discussion.

Honest mistake, no one's going to hold it against you. Just be prepared to track down your thread here in the coming hours. =)

That being said, I don't have much experience with those particular companion glitches, so I have no ideas on them, myself. I do have some suggestions for your, however, they're submission format related. If at all possible, include a save game link (with pertinent information, such as what versions you're playing, what- if any -mods you're using, etc, so that people investigating your bug can do so with the appropriate version of the game), because this allows users who are versed in the code of the game to SEE what's happening, not just rely on your descriptions.

3) Cassidy is an excellent marksman, so give him rifles, and you will be very, VERY happy with him. Shotguns are okay, but don't give him sawed offs or double barreled, if possible. You also don't want to give him Combat Shotguns, if you can help it, cause no matter how much you set a companion to NEVER use Burst Mode... they will, eventually. As AI-controlled critters, they have an affinity for obeying Snap's Law to the letter, and killing you with a perfect critical hit with Burst Mode when you least wanted them to.

4) As long as your stats meet the requirements for a stat check, it doesn't matter how they got that way, you'll pass. If you're ONLY lacking EN and/or ST, then Buffout will do the job, and you'll pass. If you're lacking CH, Buffout won't help you. if your reputation is wrong or low, NO chem will help you. Etc etc.

Moved, but as usual, the redirect will be up for a few days.

As to your bugs, three question: Are you patched up through the latest version, are you running any mods, and did you sleep with Gavin or Miria in Modoc and then not marry them?

If the third one is a yes, I might have an answer for your companion issue courtesy of Per's Nearly Ultimate Fallout 2 Guide, the holy writ from which all blessings flow:

A Very Wise Lizard said:
There's a nasty bug here you have to look out for: if you sleep with Miria or Davin and don't follow through with the wedding, your party members stop following you; they will come with you from map to map but stay rooted except in combat mode. This can be fixed by either of the following: 1) Getting married. 2) Having the Val/Vic conversation in Vault City. 3) Watching the Vault 13 video sequence. 4) Watching the Brotherhood video sequence in SF. Note that even if you don't have any party members at the time, you will still experience the effects of the bug if you should ever pick up any.

Even if you haven't fooled around with either of the Modoc siblings, you might try some of these just to be sure. The only other fix I've ever heard of for any similar problem is to dismiss your companions and then ask them to join you again.

Concerning the Broken Hills bugs, I've never heard of anything like that and a quick-and-dirty Google search didn't bring anything back. It won't help you this time around, but you might consider a fresh install. If you're not using any unofficial/fan-made patches, I'd recommend installing Killap's Unofficial Fallout 2 Patch, which fixes just about every reproducible bug anyone's found in the game in the fifteen years it's been out. (There are other fan-made patches that might be worth a look too, but having never needed anything but Killap's stuff myself, I can't recommend them from experience).

Everything else, I'll just +1 SnapSlav's answers to, though I find that giving Cassidy a combat shotgun can make him hell on wheels (rather, on decrepit old varicose-veiny legs) if you're willing to deal with reloading your game to undo a bit of catastrophic collateral damage every now and then.

As Snap's Law stipulates: "at no other time will an item or necessity feel more scarce than when it is needed most, nor more abundant than once it has been acquired"
. A vital corollary, inputting the relevant FO2 terms wherever appropriate, states, "If you really, REALLY need for Cassidy to not use Burst Mode in his next turn because you're going to be fine unless he opens fire on his current target, which will most assuredly take you out with him, then that's exactly what's going to happen. Because you don't need that right now, that's exactly what you're going to get."

He'll be a walking death machine, sure, but that knife cuts both ways... that's all I'm saying. =P

Thanks, I wasn't really sure where to put it, so thanks for moving it to the correct place. And yes I did fool around with miria and managed to trick her father that it was a "medical procedure". Where can I get the vault 13 video sequence (cause like I said vic is dead so no talking with val for me, and I sure as hell don't wanna get married). I mean yeah should be somewhere in vault 13, but as this is my first playthrough I don't know where that is (but it should be somewhere to the west of vault 15 right? Like in f1? ).

I suppose it isn't much of a spoiler to say that yeah, they kept faithful to the map layout from the first game. You've got to jump through a few hoops in NCR to have it revealed, though. It might be more expeditious to get married and arrange for a quickie separation, if that's not unappealing to you for roleplaying reasons. Father Tully in New Reno is happy to dissolve the bonds of holy matrimony for the low, low price of just one bottle of hooch. If you're feeling slightly less virtuous, you can also sell her into slavery or take her out into the wasteland and perform a do-it-yourself shotgun divorce, the "shotgun" here playing a little more of an active role than it did during your shotgun wedding. Leaving the rest of your party behind and letting her take on the wasteland unarmed and unarmored will accomplish the same thing without the karma loss, IIRC.

Well, that's the thing, I don't want to get married for the roleplaying reasons. Loved your humorous response though :D

In that case, it gets a bit involved. This is your first playthrough, so I don't want to give away too much, but there are three ways to get V13 on your map, all of them tied in with the NCR/V15 (which I assume you've made it to, as I gather you've discovered V15 already).

Without giving away too much:

  • If you gain access to Vault 15 and you have a half-decent science skill you should be able to get V13's location out of a computer (the "obvious McGuffin"-looking one on the far left) on the bottom floor of 15, which is how most players do it.
  • If you've got a good amount of cash (around $10,000 to spare) and a positive karma and you want to get things over with quicker and without risking combat, have the NCR sheriff recommend you to Councilman Westin for work so that you can gain access to the Westin Ranch, then find a guy named Saltbeef there and follow the lead he gives you. (If you don't have positive karma, they'll let you onto the ranch if you're there to make a delivery, which is a quest given elsewhere. Spoilers available if needed.)
  • If you don't want to spare the cash but you've got a high Outdoorsman skill (100% at least), go and actually talk to Westin about the job Sheriff Dumont recommended you for (again, you'll need positive karma or the Westin delivery quest to get onto the ranch in the first place). You'll be able to accept and complete Westin's task regardless of skill level, but if your Outdoorsman is high enough you'll be able to discover a route to V13 while you're on the job. Like following the Saltbeef lead, this method has the advantage of not forcing you to risk taking your bugged companions into a firefight.

Skipping as many spoilers as I can, finish the main quest at Vault 13. Then leave, wait (or faff about the wastes, though I don't imagine you're too eager to risk many fights without your companions at your back) for at least two in-game weeks, return to Vault 13, and access the vault's mainframe to see the cinematic in question. If this doesn't fix the problem, come back here and let us know so that I can drink heavily.

If you'd prefer a slightly more spoiler-laden point-by-point accounting (or if you'd like any of this clarified or expanded upon), don't hesitate to ask. It's also all laid out in the Vault 13, Vault 15, and NCR sections of Per's Guide, if you'd prefer not to wait on another reply.

Edit: You should be prepared in advance for the fact that you are going to get the bad ending for Vault 13 because of this. Don't worry; the game is bugged and it's impossible to get a good one no matter what you do. The best you could have hoped for was getting no V13 ending slide at all. Just ignore it.

Hm, I didn't know about that guide, first thing I did was F3 "infinite" and sure enough there's an infinite xp and money glitch there...Too bad I already finished broken hills...which are now even more broken apparently because not only did I freeze the game there but there's glitches :D Shame about the ending though, the game really is filled with bugs...Should get that unofficial patch as well after my first playthrough's done, that should fix most of the stuff like that right? Guessing it also removes the aforementioned infinite exploits...
And luckily my outdoorsman skill is at exactly 101% :D Didn't like the constant random encounters so I buffed it a little.
Unrelated, but how does a HtH/Stupid build do in fallout 2? And does that unofficial patch buff/nerf it in any way (like the AP bullets fix does for the guns) so I know if i should play it unpatched or patched.
Oh, and this isn't really THAT big of a deal for me though, just an annoyance since I got the sniper rifle from that base wright sent me to so now my companions should pretty much be only pack mules (needed as my str is 5 and I'm a hoarder, don't wanna do that level 1 navarro run thingy or whatever).
