Gamezone's added its two bits:
Bethesda took everything it learned in creating Oblivion and is applying it to Fallout to create a true role-playing epic. In some cases, the rendering is new to the games that Bethesda is creating – like the true water system that employs true reflections and refractions.

“We’re trying to overwhelm the player with visual density,” Howard said.

While the game could be categorized as a first-person shooter, Bethesda has taken that a bit further and is letting players select the vantage point they wish to have during the game. There is the first-person look, but third person and (“old school”) top down is also available. But the game is skill based. Weapons that can be equipped and used are governed by the abilities and skills a player has. You can get a boost to your player stats in order to use certain weapons, and the game does have the action point system – whereby can stop time and use action points to select the areas where they wish to deliver a precision shot. In addition to the shooting elements, the game will also incorporate melee skills, thus giving players a broader experience in the world.
Link: Fallout 3 preview on Gamezone.

well, I'm reading mostly the same things over and over again, to a different extent, however... the straightforward calling of F3 "first person shooter" is really pissing me off, but, deep inside, I knew it was to be expected. I couldn't realistically expect from Beth, having that FP engine that they do, to do anything else. It still hurts though. Oblivion with gunz it is not, as far as I've built an impression it will be as a cross between STALKER and Deus-Ex with orcish mutants and frigging mindless minigame(s). A good game it might be, a fallout one - definitely not, and while they do get to me with some of their sweet talk - shittiness prevails, big time. I, personnaly, adamantly hate FP views in rpg (and overall - stinks of shooter, and I don't like it!), though I can get over it, if it's worth it. F3 here is removing so much of sensible RPGing and needless to say feels so much dumbed-down and targeted at graphic whores, that, as another fellow said, F3 will be the game where RPG only means Rocket Proppelled Granade.

I wouldnt be surprised if it worked like that:

"sorry, you have just 73% in shooting, you cant use this pistol yet."

... or even like:

"you cant use this machine gun. its for characters with experience level 5."

Some very flawed logic here. They should be taking everything that was good in the first Fallouts and adding improvements in order to create a third installment, instead of taking a completely different RPG as the basis.

as you can see their tactic is to blind the easily fooled with fantastic graphics, so they'll accept whatever crap they put into gameplay (or lack thereof).

Graphics seem to be held in the highest regard, and if the game looks pretty, it can be forgiven if it plays bad, and that's just dodgy.

man, the way you make it sound it seems like f-- diablo

I like diablo!

It's not a bash on Diablo (I don't think... I liked Diablo too >.>). But Diablo is certainly not in the same vein as Fallout at all, asides the isometric viewpoint.

Wow! Look at all that visual density... in the... toilet... It's... overwhelming... Thanks, Todd!
I bet when player see that overwhelming water in one of the overwhelming toilets, he won't resist running into his own not-so-overwhelming toilet right away and start drinking.
