Fallout 3 at E3 - Jörg Langer interviews Pete Hines

I swear, the arrogance and hypocrisy represented by Pete the Liar is what's really making me hate Bethesda.

I mean who the hell is he to say people are married to certain perspectives?

Let's look at Bethesda's grand history of developed games:

TES: 1st person
TES II: 1st person
TES III: 1st person
TES IV: 1st person
TES Battlespire: 1st person
TES Redguard: 3rd person
Terminator SkyNET: 1st person
Terminator Future Shock: 1st person
Fallout 3: 1st person

Yep. They sure aren't married to a certain perspective.

Reading this interview I had a real sense of deja vu...memorized responses? Now that's quality PR...

That's because it's this interview, translated

Humm...not what I meant. I had the impression of having read Hines using the "4 pixels chair" and "I'm a Fallout fan! and I like Fallout 3." argument several times on different interviews, tough I might be wrong...

Excellent point. I had never thought of that... thanks for bringing that to light.

Pete Hines: There are lots of Fallout fans. I’m a Fallout fan!
Then I am the King of Lalaland...

I am personally interested in another game set in that universe, that is true to the kind of game experience that the first two titles provided! I’m not married to the perspective, I’m not married to whether combat is turn based or real time or a sort of hybrid.
Does this mean that he is married to FPP? I bet he is...

If you’re someone that believes it has to be isometric and turn based, then you’ll probably be unhappy.
Congratulations, Pete, you are now the winner of Stating the Obvious..

But if you’re interested in another game in that great, rich universe, that has great texture and tone and characters, then hopefully Fallout 3 will be something which will resonate with you.
um, excuse me, but isn't BG1, BG2, Torment, Fallout, Fallout2, IceWind Dale, IceWind Dale2, Jade Empire, and etc are all top-down view? And aren't them all known to be immersive? I think they 'resonate' enough...

At the end of the day, we can’t make a game that’s all things to all people.
But can't you make one for us Mr. Hines?

I really don't want to be an apologist for the man who can't stop excitedly trying to foist the myth of first-person-immersion (possibly whilst fingering his own asshole, by the look on his face) during interviews, but out of fairness to Bethesda: they have supposedly been modifying the Gamebryo engine such that there will be a viable third-person view.

Now, it remains to be seen whether they can actually introduce a decently useful and playable third-person camera (and it certainly isn't an isometric perspective), but at least they've publically acknowledged the need for something other than pure first-person.

So, that's about one-fifth of one of my concerns addressed in some small measure, now where's that list...?

Interesting questions and answers. Bring it!

wonder if they plan to include a great modding toolset...so you CAN go and make more quests and npcs and towns if you want. It would be fantastic. I really really hope this game will be more polished than oblivion was out of the box. I walked through a wall in a castle ffs and there went any verisimilitude i forced onmyself
