Fallout 3 magazine tidbits

The Bethesda blog offers some magazine tidbits on Fallout 3, including a Play magazine interviews with lead producer Gavin Carter.
play: What gameplay situations in Fallout 3 really demonstrate the engine’s new ballistics and physics system?

Gavin: The best situations to see this in are during VATS sequences. VATS allows you to pause time, target specific areas of an enemy, and queue up moves that are then executed in a cinematic fashion.

He's seemed conspicuously absent from all the pre-release hype this time. Maybe because the beating he took for all the unfulfilled OB claims.

I first thought that was somehow quoted out of context, but that's what they have on the actual site.. I don't suppose anyone can tell us if the answer in the magazine is better than this?

I think he is referring to the physics involved when you shoot someone....

But I figure you realize that and am just trying to find something to pick at...

How can you be sure? Have you read the interview in the magazine?

Why can't we pick at him for giving a totally useless answer? Granted (like I said previously) this is most likely taken out of context, but the way they give it makes him sound really stupid. So now we know where to look for their uber physics.. except.. we don't have the game.. He should have cut the VATS explanation and boasted about what their physics engine can (supposedly) do.

well it does specifically mention the cinematic action.

granted, it isn't put in the best context, but it isn't hard to infer what he is meaning.

It's plain as day. The gameplay situations (during which) you can best see the engine's new ballistics and physics system are during Vats. Why? Because it's slo-mo.

I perfectly understood it when I first read the snippet. The way you guys talk it's like:

play: What gameplay situations in Fallout 3 really demonstrate the engine’s new ballistics and physics system?

Gavin: Are you talking about VATS? VATS allows you to pause time, target specific areas of an enemy, and queue up moves that are then executed in a cinematic fashion. Duh! You people are so stupid. Why am I even talking to you? Go play Fallout 1 and 2 or die or something!1111!!11

When in fact, he's only telling what VATS is for those that don't yet know, to explain why you can see the new ballistics and physics system best at that time, because it's "executed in a cinematic fashion".

This isn't made 100% clear, I suppose, but I understood it perfectly well despite the lack of an explanation of why he defined VATS. Then again, I've been on the internet so long that I can understand what I define as Idiot Speak. I wouldn't put this snippet in that category though. :P

Wanna see how great the physics really are in this game? go watch the super duper mart teaser. It's laughable how the guy do a somersault after being hit in the head or the other one flys and hit the ceiling after being hit by a grenade explosion. Pathetic physics.

I have yet to play a next gen (whatever) 3D game with physics, that actually has a good physics system.

If nothing else then you're definitely going to see random limbs stuck through solid objects with lots of flopping due to the ingenious physics system.

Yes, so technically he DID answer the question, but that doesn't make it a USEFUL answer. Now I know where to look for their cool physics, except, I can't since I can't play the game, I can't get into a VATS scene to see their physics in action.

I was hoping for something more along the lines of him giving examples: "In VATS you queue a shot to his head and see our amazing "rip apart" doll physics when you BLOW HIM ALL UP!!" or "You can use the environment to your advantage. Blow up that nuclear car there and the shock wave will knock over your enemies!" Too bad they took out targeting cars in VATS since too many choices might make your head explode or they thought you might get confused at what you were supposed to shoot at. And those mudcrap people weren't fazed by an exploding car in the demo vid, so I guess the explosion is purely cosmetic :(

But they way they quoted it made it sound like a really stupid answer. It doesn't even make me want to buy the magazine to see what else he said.

So has any one of the dozens of hands-on gameplay write-ups mentioned a user's ability to turn off the slow motion for VATS users? Or is that an agreed no-no talking point with Bethesda? Or are these guys not even thinking about that while playing the game, and we'll instead have a sort of Final Fantasy VII situation where two months after release everyone begins to complain about how long this shit takes for every radscorpion or crusty irradiated desert goon?
