Yeah, Bethesda will make the best marketable game possible. I have no doubts.

Even if they would make a real F3 on console, I would prefer playing in on PC because of modding.

Ditto.

However there is no way in hell that my PC will run FO3 at anything but "ultra-low" settings. I have this suspicion that it will end up graphically comparing to Fallout Tactics on my PC. Oh well.

I play console games and I play PC games. I've been doing this for as long as I've played video games. There hasn't been a single case of there ever being a game for both platforms where the PC version hasn't been neutered.

Star Control, Ultima 4,5, 6,7, Wizardry 1,2,3,5,6,7,Might and Magic 2&3...

There has actually been lots of cases of PC games not being dumbed down for consoles. I guess that means you are right that there hasn't been a "single" case but...

Well those games you mention were released a long time ago,
back when PC and video games had more or less the same target audience. Then came the Playstation era.

Without being too specific I'd say the average Fallout fan is an adult. The previous Fallout games contained a lot of pop references which a teen/pre-teen (especially today) would not necessarily recognize.
I believe BS will forego such things to make Fallout 3 more accessible to younger audiences, even though the game may have a mature rating stamped on the box, it's still going to be adapted to the point where it is innocent enough to be played on the sofa at the family's big screen TV. BS are highly likely to filter out content to avoid being sued by angry PTA parents.

Actually, Wizardry 7 was on Playstation.

And the target audience for PC gamers and console gamers was vastly MORE different in the prior eras of gaming than it is today. There are much more cross platform games, (PC and console) than there used to be and consoles were not nearly as capable as they are now, in comparison to PCs.

The vast majority of console gamers, with the Super Nintendo, Genesis, NES, etc. truly were children, while today it's about 60% over 18. The average Xbox 360 owner skews even higher than the other systems and is around 28 years old. Now, with consoles having hard drives, broadband access and being too expensive for middle class children to afford, the target audience is a lot closer than it used to be.

I am defintely an adult. Over 30, married with children, in fact. But, I highly doubt all of this. There is lots that I am worried about Bethesda doing to Fallout 3, but older pop culture references and mature themes are not among my list of worries.

In fact, I would be more worried about them giving us an abundance of mature content, and claiming that that is what is so important about Fallout in order to try and quell the backlash from skimping in other areas.

I know it is sacrilege to say it here but ...

I think consoles will really hit their stride when modding is possible. Currently there should be the ability to do low level map/campaign creation (ala Starcraft) and upload it to XBOX Live for other gamers to enjoy.

I know custom skinning and other things done via PC could create issues for uploading to XBOX Live, but I think this could be overcome in the future. I would hope it is not too difficult to connect the XBOX 360 to a PC (wirelessly or otherwise) so modding could be done on a PC and then sent to the 360 (or future generation console).

You know, I tried to remain optimistic and hope that they'd do a primarily PC version, but it has become apparent that they're targeting the console market first and foremost.

I'm so sad that your predictions came to be actual guys and I will have to believe what you say here in the future. As for the console gamers that pretend to be Fallout fans(only conceivable way for this of course is to be a fan of the setting; post-apoc and such, especially with series like Jericho making it a trend amongst younger people, NOT the games which were made for PC)I can only say that they obviously argue for the argument, as it would be so paradoxical to make all those claims, as saying Sonic would be much more enjoyable on PC and imagine that as FP too. Can they really?

Anyway, my last hope that the game is salvageable is that VATS works, and the 3rd person perspective, ala Resident Evil(which I never played) indeed looks more like Fallout's than not.

If not I'll just quit and hope to assemble a team or be a part of one that will manage to mod/create one from scratch.

Hmm not a bad idea to create a separate mod to only use fallout 1 and 2 battle strategy system and apply to fallout 3 with a mod, not a bad idea at all

I don't understand. Would you mind clarifying this?

A better idea seems to be the proper use of punctuation and grammar.
