The small crash-fixing patch for Fallout 3 has been released by Bethesda, grab it for your localization from our Fallout 3 patches section.
Bug Fixes

Fixed occasional crashes when exiting the game or using Alt F4 to exit.

Fixed crashes when using Alt-Tab while binks or credits were playing.

The game now restarts properly after title updates finish installing.

So this patch pretty much does nothing? I just had my first crash after playing only 30 mins (borrowed a friend's copy). And it was lagging horribly for about 5 min before hand. That is pretty ridiculous. I wonder how long it'll take before a real patch is released. I have a feeling not any time soon.

It removes crash on exit because apparently Microsoft/GFW complained about this to Bethesda, otherwise this rather negligible patch prolly wouldn't have seen the light of day

But it's handy for those of you experience regular crashes-on-exits (oddly enough, I'm not, even though I bumped into a myriad of bugs)

It's a bit unfair to suggest the only reason this patch came out is at the behest of Microsoft. While they may have encouraged them to speed it up, and in fact may have been partly to blame since it looks like GFWL is part of the conflict, there is a decent patch being worked on for the game in general.

I'd better damn well assume they're working on a real patch, but I'm saying this patch is out at this point pretty much as "requested by Microsoft", as Gstaff puts it. There's nothing wrong with that, it's just an explanation why this fairly insignificant patch is there at all - this isn't like Fable II's main quest-stopping quickfix, y'know.

I hope we get a PS3 patch that fixes the myriad of shit we have to deal with on that system.

Really? What does it fix?

I do not have specifics. But I'd wager that some of the issues that have been widely reported would be top of the list. A few Megaton NPCs that like to fall over the railing to their death, the Big Town robots can be unreilable when completing the freeform quest, etc.

But that's just a guess. All I know is that plenty of the team is still working on these issues. But thanks to console platforms, fixes take much longer to get approved than most of us would like.

Have a link / proof of this patch?

Go to official forums, Gstaff posted about making another bigger patch. But it has to go through testing etc...

And I almost can not believe they finally fixed crash on exit. I suffered from it with Oblivion, Shivering Isles and Fallout 3 as well, though it was a bit rarer.

Well, at least something good out of GfW.

Skepticism is warranted in respect to Bethesda after what they did with Oblvion (2-3 official patches released by Bethesda, 14 unofficial patches made by fans to fix the vanilla game) so assumptions about what they will obviously do in regards to fixes are understandably minimal.

They need a patch that fixes the "crash when starting the game" problem. The game works fine on my Vista computer (although I sometimes have to start it twice) but refuses to play on the XP system.

I'm on Vista, and the game crashes for me all the time, although the only bug I can remember encountering was it skipped the level-up screen for me when I hit level 4.

Steam should release a version of the patch soon, right? Riiight?

Good to know crash-on Alt+Tab got fixed. I had that, and really hated it.

TBH though, something like this should've been a release-day patch...

I encountered that one as well. can't remember if it was on level 4 or not, but at one point it skipped the leveling up screen. I immediately reloaded a save I had just made and this time I got it. a wild guess is that it happened because I brought up the pip-boy or looted an enemy at the exact same moment the leveling up screen was supposed to appear.

I kinda hate that you don't get to choose when to level up. that's a part I really liked with the old games - you could save skill points for when you really needed them and you had all the time in the world to plan your character.

Happened to me on level four too. All I did was sleep somewhere and as soon as I woke up the point distribution screen appeared.

Turns all the grey and brown into green and blue and guns into swords.

Don't forget it also:

- Removed a bug that was forcing the game into a first-person perspective. Everything should now be working just fine in the 2D sidescroller format that we intended.

and fixes Bloody Mess:

- Bloody Mess: Now causes enemies to explode in gibs when struck. The previous version of this perk has been removed, along with all references to sanitary pads.

Although I can't take credit for this http://www.somethingawful.com/d/video-game-article/fallout-patch-notes.php

I'm pretty sure I was also hitting some button at the same time the screen was supposed to pop up like you said, so maybe that's what triggers it. Although, after it happened to me I wasn't thinking and walked into a building and it autosaved. And I had been only using autosave up until that point. Whoops.

Sidescroller?

A joke. I believe it's picking on how FOO plays like an arcade shooting game =)

On a side note, loved 1-liner review for FOO: "
Lives up to all the expectations, especially the expectation that Bethesda still hasn't learned how to make convincing human faces. 9/10"
