Fallout 3 reviews round-up #55

One thing I want to ask...

I know it's the cool thing to do around here to hate on Fallout 3, but does anyone here truly hate the game?

I will give you that it isn't as good as either of the first Fallout games by a long shot. It could even be argued that it isn't a true Fallout game. But are people here playing the game and actually not enjoying it?

I find Fallout 3 to be a perfectly enjoyable experience, in much the same way Deus Ex 2 was still a pretty decent game, just nothing compared to Deux Ex (though I fully expect someone to criticize that remark, too).

You say this as if people get plus points just for spewing mindless hate for the game. This shows that you've either not been reading what people actually say around here, or have been reading selectively. NMA is does not have one 'preferred' opinion. People do disagree. Idiocy from any camp does usually end up in the vats. It's a bit insulting when a newcomer comes here with prejudice and starts off with blanket generalizations.

Didn't mean to offend. That statement was meant to be mildly humorous...

That said, I have seen considerably more hate for the game than anything else. Just trying to get a feel for how many people simply hate the game as a game. I can understand the feeling that it does a disservice to the license. Personally, I think it's a fine game in its own right, with many marks both for and against it.

I just wonder if some who complain so vehemently about the game really do like it, but refuse to admit as much, or if they truly do consider it to be gutter trash.

Edit:
As an example of what I've witnessed, here's this little nugget:
If you're a real Fallout veteran and fan, you don't buy or play this game in the first place.

Personally I think RPGs that are all hack n slash are ok. They are fun in their own way, but they should be done entirely around that point - hacking n slashing.

Putting too much hacking n slashing into a game that tries to have a plot and a serious story doesn't work well.

Also, I do think there are some people here who hate the game simply on principle. I'm not saying everyone is like that, I'm saying that you can't deny that there are such people.

I've seen a lot of love for the game too, granted there are a lot more discussions about it's flaws since those are things which need to be fixed or never should have been done in the first place but there has been at least one thread focusing on the positives of the game.

There is a fair number of people on these boards who like the game, even more who recognize that the game excels in some areas, so I think it's pretty ridiculous to suggest that any sizable portion of visitors here pretend to hate the game when they actually like it, especially when there are many other forums where they could about how cool it is, including BGSF.

Real fans of the series are just happy that there's something new to play in the universe.
NMA is diverse, not everyone hates the game and not everyone loves it, most people like and dislike parts. The whole concept of "real fans" is fallacious and it's something that both sides are equally guilty and wrong.

Well said. I think perhaps I'm just running into the "vocal minority" problem. :)

I've been specifically looking for people who praise the game on the board after posting my query. There are a fair number, some of whom even rank in the vocal minority (actually, judging by the never-ending outpour of glowing reviews, perhaps majority) of those who can find no fault in the game whatsoever.

And I agree completely about the misguided concept of "real fans."

Yeah, I do HATE this game.

Firstly - It tries to be something that it fails miserable at - a Fallout game, so it's a +1 to hatred. For fucking up a series like this and still claim to be the best thing since sex deserves criticism.

Secondly - pathetic storyline, humour and dialogues combined with ridiculous amount of gunfights, crappy looking, behaving and animated enemies, far too common dungeon crawling (with shitty loot, to that) are another reasons why it fails at beign a good game.

Thirdly - broken physics engine leads to pathetic-looking errors. Overall laziness in design and many unfinished stuff. No consistency in the setting, cheesy weapons like the Rock-It Launcher, worst NPCs I've seen so far....

This is not the first of my rants on this game, so I'll just skip to the conclusion, as I already such much more than it's worth about this game.

With so much things broken and done wrong in this game, there is just not enough things really interesting. How long can exploration be fun, if you rarely get anything interesting for it? How long can you watch every shot you fire in slow-motion, if the game is composed in 80% of shooting? How long can you tolerate fuck-ups and tell yourself "Man, there is gotta be *something* interesting in the next Vault, I know it", only to disappoint yourself again, after finding a broken down rifle and 3 maddened Vault Dwellers with sledgehammers, rushing at you like rabid dogs?
