Hello all,
I have been playing Fallout 4 for a couple of days now since it has been released and have mostly been keeping to the North to explore all the locations rather than immediately following the main quest.
My expectation was to explore most of the map within one day or two and then move on with the campaign but truth is that I haven't even fully been able to explore all of the north (right now I am exploring the coast)
And between all the journeys to my home base to deliver all crap I found and exploring the map and the various buildings/places in it I am not sure if I will be able to finish finding all locations on the upper side of the map in another gaming session of the same length.
Some of the people who wrote their opinion on Fallout 4's map said that it was way to small yet I have the feeling that this map is much larger than the ones from both Fallout 3 and New Vegas, and contains much more locations. Also some of the locations themselves are also much bigger than the ones of the previous two games.
Could anyone tell me here if I am correct in thinking this?
But now the quality of the map. While I am impressed with the large number of locations so far, the locations themselves seem somewhat of a mess.
A couple of places I found such as a factory at the coast, a national storage facility (I think it was called that), and a steel foundry are quite larger internally.
But towns and cities so far are pretty average, most buildings are closed off and only a few buildings like that Corvega factory, a school, and a super duper market amongst others can be entered.
Cities start to feel a little like a Fallout version of a Pac man maze.
There are also a lot of locations placed throughout the map that do not seem to serve much of a purpose other than a place where the players fights raiders, wildlife, ghouls, Super Mutants, and Synths (I also faced the Children of Atom at one location). Perhaps some kind of quest I would get from a quest giver might otherwise have shown these locations on the map had I not found them through exploration but I have this feeling that they have just been placed there to fill up the map.
Fallout 3 also suffered from this (and Fallout New Vegas to a limited extend)
Outside Sanctuary and Diamond City which I have not visited yet, the only other 'real' town so far has been Covenant. It was a bit small but it at least comes over as a settlement to me. (Salem only consisted of one guy holed up in his fortified house) I suspect I will probably also find the bases/HQs of the various factions and some Vaults.
But outside the settlements you can set up yourself are there any other towns?
It feels much like the crafting system of quality over quantity and I am not sure if more locations are necessarily better if most of them are just lairs of enemies and places full of junk.
If Bethesda had made a bigger map as some people online would have insisted I feel it would not have resulted in more fully worked out places, complete with populations or interesting quests.
