Fallout Ammo in 3D

Water Chip? Been There, Done That
Today I started making 3d models of the ammo in Fallout (don't ask me why).

Right now I have the 10mm JHP and the 10mm AP finished. Kinda logical since they are almost the same model. Anyhoo, here's the 10mm JHP:

And here's the 10mm AP:

Suggestions/comments/critics are welcome as always.

The next one I'll do will be the .223 FMJ I think. If anybody else has a better suggestion for the next one, I'll take it into consideration.

1) The metal on the bullets looks like porcelain, not like metal.

2) The AP round has an anthracite/red tip. Ye forgot the gray part.

Yes, I saw they both have gray colors on the tip... I've already changed it in the model, I'll update the pictures.

But what exactly do you mean with your first point?

What program did you use to make these? I'm learning alias studiotools right now, because I need it for a uni course starting on Monday.

Good work, but the lighting reflection on the bullets is too strong, in my opinion. also, as Wooz said, doesn't really look like metal. The texture and denting is wrong.

I use 3dsMax.

Yeah, they are a bit over-reflecting... but I like reflection :D

But maybe that does make them look less like metal... any pointers on how to change it, anybody?

you should also add writing on the bottom of the round. something like:

10x23mm AUTO
JHP

or

10x23mm AUTO
AP

(note: i dont know the real length of a real life 10mm round, but i know it's supposed to be long, hence the 23 estimate. however, it's the FO world, so you can do whatever you please)

It looks good but some more bumpy then real bullets metal.
Sorry for asking but ... where are Video with Vic's house?
If you have problems with youtube i can help you to publish video on my site. Let me know - if you want this.

What I meant is that the lighing on the object doesn't "work" as if it was metal. It reflects light as my morning coffee mug on steroids, not as, say, a metal object.

A metal object usually has a pretty deep shadow just next to the light reflection, check the source images closer, or just observe a tin can's surface.

Ah yes, I see what you mean. Right now I first need my dosis nicotine and caf... Red Bull and then I'll see if I can fix that.

A good rule of thumb is; when you increase reflection, decrease diffusion. A mirror will typically not have an intrinsic color because it reflects color from it's surroundings.

I would shy away from reflection anyway. Computer algorithms for reflection aren't very good. You're usually better off using specularity and rendering with radiocity so that objects will pick-up light from each other. Also, bumpy metal looks like it came out of a mold (like the lead slugs on the bullets) but I would use a subtle streaky texture along the length of the casings to give them a more machined look.

Good luck!

Pff, it's pretty hard to get the right look in 3dsMax.

With the lighting I mean, the bump map is easy to do.

Yeah, it's got radiosity... but that still doesn't make it easier to create that effect. I already have something where you first have a patch of shadow and then shinyness... but that still looks weird...

Anyhoo, I've already started on making the .223 FMJ picture, just have to make the clip and then put all the bullets in. I take it there are 50 bullets in that clip, seeing as there are 50 bullets in it in game...

I allways thought it was 10, since it looks as if it is a clip for the hunting rifle, wich takes 10...But it is 50 in one "package" in the inventory though... :?

logically (if you stick to modern gun convention), a .223 FMJ pic should have either 10 (hunting or USA civilian clip), 20 (oldstyle mag) or 30 (modern mag), but certainly not 50. a 50 clip would simply be waaaaay too large to handle with decent comfort, even if you were to somehow use a triple stack design.
