Fallout Chicago: Silent Storm Engine Modification

Hi there!
(I hope this is the right section...)

I have been busy making a Fallout style mod based on a non-fallout game. The game is Silent Storm Sentinels (if you need a reference, just check Steam or GoG and look for Silent Storm Gold).

Just trying to make sure there are folks who may be interested in this project and who may eventually take part in it.
Basically it is a modification for another game which transforms it into more or less classic Fallout: isometrical turn-based RPG experience in the post nuclear Fallout universe.

I have been collecting and building assets (like models, textures etc.) and writing story so far as well as checking this concept in-game. Here are some screenshots I can show:

If these links do not work for you or you need a mirror, I will try to provide an alternative.

I'm surprised to see that no one commented on this yet.
Well, to be honest, it isn't beautiful. Interface looks way worse than F1/F2/Tactics interface. It's a mess.
But you know what? I don't care how it looks. If you can make a game with C&C, where all skills are usable (I mean skills like first aid and gambling too!) and satisfying... I would play it to death.

Could you write more about story? Do you have some devblog or something? Please tell more.
Good luck!

This probably belongs in general gaming rather than Fallout modding, but I'm sure someone'll move it eventually.

I didn't even know the game existed until now, but the assets look functional, at the very least. The far right interface will probably need a major rework and the rest needs tweaked, but it's good enough so far.

The Enclave armour looks very dodgy, but the vertibird and vault dweller are pretty good.

I can't really judge much beyond that, but if you posted a synopsis of your plot I'd be happy to critique it.

Hey, thanks for feedback!

50% agree. Not a 2D artist, some textures may look "cringey". I may revisit some UI parts in the future and see what I can do.
Regarding the mess. The UI design is not final but from my point of view is OK. Left part is more "falloutish" while the right part is a Silent Storm legacy; sure it can be changed but for now it stays. Actually I have no idea what it should look like.

if you can make a game with C&C
What is C&C? I am confused.

I am afraid it is impossible to rebuild all Fallout 1-2 skills. Skills in Silent Storm are hard coded and cannot be modified without access to .exe (and that means hacking). For now I have not found a solution for that. Adding new skills seems impossible too but I will try to check it out.

S2 Engine can support Active Skills (like Repair or First Aid where you could target a unit/object and use your skill) but not in this version – I think it can be modified with dev tools (alas, only devs had them).

The Skills so far:

Ranged (all ranged weapons), Melee (unarmed and melee both), Throwing (darts, shurikens, knives and grenades), automatic weapons (smg and mg with burst fire mod ), Outdoorsman (RE checks for Global Map, noticing hidden things, spotting mines and traps etc.), Sneak (self explanatory), Mechanics (Repair + Lockpicking), Initiative (similar to Sequence, + defines your placement in RE and whose turn will be, gives chance to interrupt enemy during their turn if they miss etc. - the last part is from Silent Storm).

There are 2 "blank" skills which probably will be Speech and Science.

As for SPECIAL: there are 3 attributes and that will be the maximum. STR, INT, AG. Yeah, that sucks.

Do you have some devblog or something? Please tell more.

I may add a blog in the future if people are interested. Had a page since my last mod for Silent Storm but eventually dropped it.

I checked before posting. Taken from the Modding Section:

...This is regardless whether it's a Fallout RPG game being modded or another game being modded towards Fallout's style...

I guess, this is the right place.

It was a good game. More like JA + Fallout Tactics + Good physics + Total destructibility + Powerful Scripting System

The Enclave armour looks very dodgy
True. Still looking for a chance to find a proper model. Not a modeller. This one is placeholder, but looks superior to a previous one (that was really terrible).

Story is still WIP (like everything else). It involves Chicago and its surroundings (BoS had to leave the area and set a defensive perimeter due to <Censored>. This area is not controlled by them and once enough is very dangerous. Chicago will play the major part in the story as it is inhabited once more)

P.S. I believe the only enemies will be humanoids and robots. No way to add dogs and huge creatures due to engine limitations.

Thanks for your answer! By C&C I meant choices and consequences (if you decide to do X, Y will happen etc). I've never played Silent Storm so thanks for clarifying.
I'll check this thread from time to time to see the progress :)

Thanks for clarifying! :) Yes! C&C is a fundamental part of this project. Basically you will have to think twice before doing something. Pissing off some factions may turn things into a dumpster fire, especially for unprepared characters. Diplomacy (as well as "No violence" approach) can be very useful to avoid situations like that.

By the way I learned a new way of importing new quality content (mostly models). As a 3-day Maya user I managed to add some cool stuff (models still need some optimizing and polishing).
Trust me, it wasn't easy.

I would personally go with the Power Armor from Fallout 1 and 2 moreso than the later installments. They work better in a top down view, in my opinion.

Hi Heruvim. I dont know what got into you but is it really a good idea to mod an almost ten years ago old 2d isometric game? Your game assets looked great, but would not you think making a complete new game from scratch using today's 3d game engine such as unity or unreal engine is far easier than hacking at this old thing?

This is friggin' great. If you are by chance the same Heruvim I think you were, I greatly enjoyed your Silent Storm mods and was kinda saddened to hear you weren't going to continue True Terror mod anymore. But seeing this project, I am happy to hear you haven't quit altogether. :)

Good point.
I think this one looks much better.

Hi!
Silent Storm is full 3D game with nice features like destructible environment (except ground which can not be destroyed; however you may imitate this if you wish). Silent Storm engine was pretty powerful back then but alas very underrated. The only downside I see today is its inability to process "high-poly" characters (e.g. the game freaks out if you spawn too many 2000+ edges characters too close to each other; the less edges, the better).

People still modding F1 and F2 by the way, which is pretty cool if you ask me.

Sounds like a full-time job for a team. Not to mention Bethesda owns Fallout franchise, and making a game in this universe without their consent will be a simple fizzle.

This is a fan non-profit project. For now I manage to make nice stuff while having much fun using modkit and tools (no hacking!). But yeah I wish more people would be involved.

Yup, that's me. I am glad people enjoyed Redesigned.
TT isn't dead though as I saved all files and docs.

Sorry that I miss understood what you said you are doing. You are indeed moding for silent storm not fallout. But then again, it would seems that you should post this in the silent storm modding forum and not here lol

No problem! ;)

Since I already replied to a similar comment, I will keep it short: this thread is in the right place.

However if someone does not like or is not interested in the project, feel free to ignore this thread.
