Fallout is not getting the appropriate attention

Humpsalot

Still Mildly Glowing
Game Informer magazine, largest PC and Video game magazine in the world (so I read). This month nothing on Fallout 3, no preview, no review, nothing. Gave Dead space a 9.25 and listed it as the game of the month...

I don't need to hear the blah blah blah about how it "sucks so no one should cover it" very funny and very original. But I for one want the news of any Fallout to spread to the masses for the glory of the originals.

I saw my first fallout commercial on ESPN the other day. It was the "i dont want to set the world on fire one" Starts in a tram then zooms out to dc blown to hell and the BoS guy. Again not good advertising on BS part. If I knew nothing about the game this commercial would just show me there is some sort of media coming about about DC being blown up, could be a movie, book, video game, or terrorist threat. I see nobodies from the industry on video game show doing interviews about crappy games, but nothing from BS. "Pete did a online interview" ya, he did, but that type of information only gets to people deliberately seeking it, and most likely already buying the game...

I no longer have the highest hopes that this will get game of the year, MGS4 probably will. But it will be to 5 game of the year and I just don't think it is getting the media it deserves.

IMO it feels like it isn't being covered because BS is still being tight lipped and anal about releasing information about the game, not giving shows anything to cover. Or maybe game informer gave them the big "fuck you" when asked to fly somewhere to review a game.

You have got to be kidding, right?

Every where you turn, the damn thing is blasted across game sites.

Ok, game sites, I'll give you that one, though I haven't personally seen it. I want BS to do what EA did with mercenaries 2. Pound it down out gullets. It's been a long while but I played, or to be accurate, watched someone play Morrowind for a long time, thought it was interesting about how you can make your own uber powerful spells, but kinda left it at that.

The point I am trying to make is that I didn't follow TES at all, but I remember Oblivion being brought to my attention and jammed down my neck via commercial on all channels 24/7 before during and after its release. That is just the advertising side of it. And I can't even imagine the reasoning behind this, we have enough pre orders to be green lighted for a sequel so it is good enough for us?

On the media coverage, I watch xplay a lot and gametrailer TV on fridays, no one is talking about it. Farcry 2 got about 10 minutes a day for a week before it was released. Every time someone drops anything resembling a sockpuppet for littlebigplanet it gets 6 days of coverage.

Now, I guess the core of this problem is, who is to blame? BS for not getting them any new information and interviews to cover or Xplay not asking them for interviews because they don't think it deserves the coverage?

In all honesty, it is getting a lot of promotion, but it isn't getting the usual treatment in regards to reviews.

Generally speaking a lot of games are reviewed 1-2 weeks prior to release.

Heck IGN lots of times has stuff giving detailed accounts of gameplay prior to a games release.

Beth is controlling junk way too much on this game.

I get this distinct feeling it's because

a) A lot of people downloaded it illegally and have already played it, so they can't lie like they are used to anymore

b) They blew way too much money on that retarded launch party

c) They ran out of people to bribe, or the magazines that take themselves a bit more serious refuse to play into Beth's hype machine.

Not that I really care, though. The worse it sells, the better.

Bethesda traded the exclusive review to OXM. PSM3 has the PS3 exclusive, and I'm guessing we'll see a PC exclusive review too, but obviously Game Informer's hands are tied by the exclusivity deal with OXM

Yes, Bethesda is pretty paranoid, which is pretty much the explanation for it.

Sounds like they painted themselves into a corner.

Funny how so many people have "exclusives"

Was PC PowerPlay the PC exclusive? It's a strange magazine to give the exclusive to but it's still a PC gaming magazine.

Once a company starts putting on TV ads it loses the ability to bitch about not getting enough publicity. Also, no magazine that didn't get a pre-release copy of the game is going to be able to review it for November because they will most have already printed their magazines by the time it's released.

No, it was the Australian exclusive.

They gave exclusives to every major country plus exclusives for SP# and Xbox 360. It remains to be seen if the PC has an exclusive for NA.

It's not that exceptional to see pre-release exclusives but Bethesda is pushing it pretty close to release. I think that is to expect getting mingled up the in the review tides of Fable II, which are already betting.

We're entering a weekend now so I doubt we'll see the review storm break much before release. Maybe the day before. It is a bit unusual, but their choice. They're a bit traditional in PR.
