Fallout becomes available on the GameTap downloading service this week, as told by Joystiq:
The feel-good post-nuclear-apocalypse game about finding a Water Chip, Fallout, joins GameTap this Thursday. There are still no details about when Fallout 2 will make an appearance on the service, but when GameTap originally announced Fallout was coming, the company did say it would be adding the "series." For those with some patience, the original Fallout should be available on GameTap's free service at some point in the future.
Link: Fallout @ GameTap

Dude, I could've totally waited a decade and a half to play Fallout. What a waste of $40.

Neat!

Weird choice of words, though, "Feel-good."

This'll be great for people who don't have their own copies of FO1. Hopefully it'll bring lots of people- especially those who were too young to play the game- lots of enjoyment, and allow them to see what we all see in the game.

edit: Or you could've waited three or four and paid $20 (bwahaha.)

I'm not too fond of GameTap's system. If I were to buy Fallout online, I'd wait for GOG.com to launch.

Still, I'd rather pay $5 for it than use it with the GameTap player (e.g. without the possibility of playing it offline).

I quite old-fashionedly preffer owning my stuff. A nice oppurtunity for those mildly interested to try the game for free, but its not for me. I'll probably get the gog download when its out, because right now I have the original only in Polish.

Even in our tax deductible basements.

Pay for the water tapped in and the sewage that flows out.

Only rent the water.

Bandwidth is never free.

Electric wattage is never free.

Unless our time perception *lies* on a different line,
'free' time to punch the QWERTY is opportunity borrowed from a pay when due future.

Perhaps the time is rented too.

One 'free', no, two, no thee 'free' choices, which end of our candle to burn.

All the while our mouse clicks are under constant commercial surveillance

Consumer patriots, 'free'-domain is never free.

Wait!

Might get a rebate.

This isn't one of their rental games, it's one of their FREE games.

Yes, but you probably still can't play it without the GameTap client and without being online. So it's still rental as far as I'm concerned.

Since I do occasionally use Gametap (they have some pretty neat free games) I can say that as of a few months ago you definitely had to be online to play the games (I don't know if the game will actually cut out, but you can't launch without internet).

That said, having a free version of the game out there would definitely be a boon as it should help pick up a few more fans. Consequently, maybe put some pressure on BS to make a true sequel (or license it to someone who would).

EDIT: I tried out a few games and for those, while you have to be logged in to launch the games, if you lose connection while playing (essentially any time after the game launches) nothing happens (ie you can continue to play until you close down the game).

Yeah, with GT you rent the game, with GOG you'll own it.

Well even though its "free", its a form of rent because you never get to keep it. Even if you hypothetically are willing to go ad-ware ad infinitum, there's no telling how long this experimental online contraption will last or keep its current conditions of use. Either way, again, I prefer a hard, real, physical copies of the stuff I have. You never know when a fallout might hit, and cut off the world. :D

4too: I am inspiringly confused. Brilliant.

As much as I'd want it, if Fallout 3 is a financial success (and I think it will be), there will probably never be a faithful sequel to Fallout.

Eh, hope springs eternal and all that. And personally I have to many games I want to replay (or play) and not nearly enough time. So while I'm not waiting with baited breath, I figure there is an off chance that eventually I'll get a game that I like (or be somewhat disappointed like I was with the final Legacy of Kain game that never materialized or a sequel to Beyond Good and Evil).

Hehe. Bit late for that anyway, don't ya think? If anything it might educate some people about just how much Bethesda butchered the franchise. But I wouldn't count on it too strongly. Those that would actually care or appreciate it, either already played it or have heard.
As Ausir predicts FO3 is gonna sell great, giving Bethesda no motivation or rather a disincentive to go back to the ever sulkier originals. I really am suprised at the amount of praise and anticipation its garnering even on supposedly personal blogs. I don't get why; it really doesn't look like anything special to me (definetly not S.P.E.C.I.A.L. if you know what I mean, haha great pun  ).

On Gametap: I remember browsing a while back, and the only thing of interest (to my highly refined essence of gaming taste) was Planescape: Torment and the Sam and Max episodes, which I thought might be worth a shot, but both required (I'm certain of Planescape, I think S&M as well) a paid gold account.

I doubt that.

Why would they when FO3 is coming out!

Is the GameTap client also free?

I have no experience with this - never really heared of GameTap also.

I was searching for a FAQ or basic rules page to paste for you, but I can''t find one. If there is one its well hidden (or I'm strategically blind).

The basic client is free, that is when you want to download a free game you first download the gametap app, and then somehow abra-cadbra you get to play a selection of games for free (that is with routine commercial breaks). Or that's the theory, I never downloaded it out of my zeno-ware-o-phobia (and all things Turner). If someone's tried it first hand, please rectify any unthruths I may have spread.

I believe its N. America only, but again couldn't find any palpable info.

On a side note, Deus Ex is there on the free games roster (shameful confession: have not yet played(!)), along with a few other notable titles.

ya, i noticed the deus ex free game too. nice that they covered the whole bandwidth of shooter game quality with just 2 titles: deus ex and daikatana. damn were my hopes high for daikatana at that time...

anyway, if its on tap, it might surface on other freeware sites sooner or later. correct me if i am wrong, but gametap does not offer some bundleware but "real" freeware" with its strings attached, namely the rather sucky client.

i have no sources on the suckiness except a colleague told me so, and he wont let me copypasta him here.
