Feels like Oblivion

Morbus

Sonny, I Watched the Vault Bein' Built!
In a moving display of love for the fans, Todd Howard clarifies some aspects about Fallout 3. Again.
GamePro: To Oblivion players, what will Fallout 3 feel like? It's obvious (to us at least) that combat mechanics and design play a much larger role in Fallout 3 than Oblivion.

Todd Howard:
The overall game flow feels like Oblivion, in that you make your own character and then explore a huge open world and do whatever you want. The basic gameplay of Fallout 3 is similar, which is one of the reasons we really wanted to do Fallout in the first place. I'd say the amount of action is similar to Oblivion, not more, not less. (...)
If you want to keep reading (not much else to read though), be sure to check the full GamePro.com’s interview.

Thanks Mr Lizard.

And let the discussion begin...

Seriously, if you liked Fallout and/or Fallout 2...

There's no saying on whether you'll like this one...

I'd say the amount of action is similar to Oblivion, not more, not less. (...)

Now this is a bit of WTF. Perhaps I have twisted memories, but it seemed like I ran into enemies all the damn time while in Oblivion.
I really hope I won't hear some goddamn battle music starting up every minute.

Suddenly I suspect that the world will feel very overpopulated. Especially with the whole scale and world travel being different than previous Fallouts.

It's amusing that the first question is how the game will feel like to Oblivion players.

Yeah, well, it just gets worse and worse with every newspost... why the fuck are you doing this to me? Please stop posting this shit already, it makes me depressive, angry and upset and not wanting to visit this site anymore..

One is a newspost, the other his opinion. We have standards here.

A propos:

Notice what he points out. Don't be anal.

Can't believe I'm agreeing with a furry, but yeah. His "Feels like Oblivion" could encapsulate FO1 and 2 as well. The action part is a little iffier, but we shall see.

We're a Fallout fansite. We report Fallout news. We're not here to please you.

I liked fallout

Oblivion just bored me (and felt nothing like fallout in mechanics).

Just call it a spin off and stop trying to delude either yourself or your customers.

Also, this isnt really news.

I know, but there are "news" and there are news.. I mean it almost seems like you're searching for the most retarded bethesda statements in random interviews on some sites i never heard of and then post the most depressing part of it on your frontpage... That's really painful and hasn't much to do with real news (news as in new information), if you're being honest with yourself..

It almost seems like we care about your opinion on how we're supposed to run the website's news section.

Well, nothing really new and/or earthshaking from To(a)dd. Adding yet another quote to the "told ya it will be Oblivion with guns" folder and moving on. I'm still eagerly anticipating more gold statements from Emil who tends to praise Overlord for its story.

Yes and no. Sure it's fun to wander aimlesly for hours encountering two people per square mile just like in Oblivion but isn't the necessity to travel anywhere on foot, with no map travel going to more likely encapsulate nacrolepsy?

With companies like Beth who, in terms of releasing some useful information (NOT 'immershun/innovashun' stuff, mind you) to the press tend to be tighter than a 5th grader it is quite essential to filter the bullshit in search for some valid data on what might Fallout 3 look like. And it's funny that you mention the 'most retarded Betgesda statements'. Do a little math and try to count all the retarded statements. Does the number seem a bit... I don't know... BIG? Any conclussions?

Huh? A quote from Todd Howard describing the amount of combat, a topic of much speculation is neither "random" nor "retarded". Indeed I’m glad for the clarification as in the past Pete and Emil dodged this topic with vague prevarications like 'not sure' and 'not really loooked at that'.

However, I agree it's depressing to read, "the amount of action is similar to Oblivion," as this confirms that the pacifist character is another "non-core" element of Fallout.

This is one of the times when all I can think is, "*whiff* Todd, you missed it." And just remember, you'll not want to turn the gore settings down since "it would be a lot less fun without that level of gore," adds Pagliarulo.

Please don't tell me that "I'd say the amount of action is similar to Oblivion, not more, not less." is a valuable description to you, because that statement means pretty much nothing. If you take it word for word as true it basically means that their post-apocalyptic wastelands will be filled with the same amount of life/NPCs/enemies as the oblivion fairytale forests, which would be pretty stupid, even by bethesdas standards. It was just a catchphrase to make all the oblivion fans happy with their new project, not more, not less.

So you can read Todd's mind to glean the 'real meaning' behind his words?

They're already working on it. With Fallout 1.5: Ressurrection and a couple of other mods? I think Fallout's future isn't as bad as it seems...

Man, like i said, there is no real meaning behind his words. It's just another of those random meaningless phrases they throw out from time to time in interviews. Like most of them, this one here also doesn't gives us any more insight about how the game will be. It's not reading minds but simple common sense and having seen them doing this repeatedly (with oblivion).
