FIFE hits a few bumps but trods onwards

FIFE, the replacement engine for Fallout that's been in the works for as long as most of us can remember (well...september 2005), has been trodding onwards steadily but slowly. From their blog:<blockquote>Our policy was to be always honest to the public about problems and the truth is that there was only small steps forward in the last months. It seems that several developers have left the team without saying a word and that is really disappointing for us
(...)
Nevertheless I'm happy that some important key developers are still around</blockquote>On our forums, mvBarracuda stated "We intend to release a new official FIFE version in the next days".

Ahh thanks for the ultrafast news coverage :-)

You're ace Kharn

EDIT: FIFE is there since September 2005. That's not that long ;-) remember that we started from scratch with FIFE as the old ianout code was not really usable as basis for FIFE.

Edited that in because it looks funny

I have a hard time not looking at FIFE as a continuation of ianout, tho'

That's prolly because we didn't go into detail about the issues with SztupY. SztupY created ianout and he wanted to make sure that we don't use the name for future releases. And as already said: we didn't use a single line of ianout code for FIFE.

So sure the projects are somehow related but I wouldn't call FIFE a "continuation" of ianout, especially as it was one of our main aims to handle things different to how SztupY did with ianout. But maybe I'm just nitpicking here ...

A more serious note: it seems that our coder who is responsible to finish some final tasks before we can release the package is rather busy in the next days. Maybe we can release within a week but I wanted to announce possible delays rather early before somebody says that we're playing the misinformation game.

what will the next release be able to do? Can I play anything in it yet?
Nah, you can't really call this "play". But you can remove object and critters from the mapview now *g* Have a look into the README file of this release to get a clue how this works.

OMFG it's done:
http://downloads.sourceforge.net/fife/FIFE_2007.0_win32.exe

Install guide:
1. Download
2. Execute the self-extracting 7zip archive and uncompress to a folder of your choice
3. Read the readme.txt that can be found within the folder where you uncompressed FIFE

EDIT: Could anyone of the NMA staff write a little news post about this please?
