The reason why you don't have securom problems is that the US version of the game has no cd protection. The European version has securom, and the Eastern Europe version has Starforce (bleh).
what the hell?

can you source this claim btw? especially the no cd-protection thing in the USA. that'd make no sense.

What prevents the Russian pirates from simply obtaining the US copy of the game from the Internet?

The language barrier?

Please..

Perhaps the regional copy protection was decided from a public relations standpoint, rather than by the regional risk of piracy. That THQ felt that American consumers would be the most critical of Starforce, and would be the most likely to avoid purchasing the game because of it.

It could even be a mixture of motives, balancing backlash from copy protection against the protection from piracy, and working it out regionally from that viewpoint.

Of course, I don't actually know anything about how THQ operates, so this is all baseless conjecture. Another scenario could be that the regional offices of THQ are highly independent, and they decided on copy protection individually.

Whatever it is, they felt the need to punish Russian gamers, pat European gamers on the head, and treat American gamers like.. well.. :?

Well the Russian release wasn't published by THQ, it was publichsed by GSC Game world themselves.

I've installed the patch, but there are still many, many bugs in quest system. I always get messages that I've finished quests - but I've never heard of them before. And if I not return to the quest deliverer, who is the wrong person in log sometimes, quest is marked as "failed" and my reputation is sinking - sometimes to lowest value in one step. Other quests are started over and over again, each time when I'm in certain locations. In other cases quest items are not accepted by the customers.
Some treasure places are not marked on the map correctly - other marks remain even when I got the tresure already.
The KI is still cheating - enemies are firing at me from out of scanner range sometimes - at night! - , when I'm in combat with enemies nearby. The armor color protects only enemies from being sighted, but not me - wearing a black jacket makes no difference.
Some enemies respawn immediately - so some fights are without any sense - except for statistics and more boom boom.

I got the game last weekend and am pretty happy with my purchase ($35-39 I think I payed). The implementation of realism into the game I LOVE, but they need a little helpfulness in it as well I think.

The guns wearing down over time is fine, misfires etc but give us gun cleaning kits in-game so we can repair them. I would say the primary dialogs had been translated but the other odds and ends were about 35-45% translated to English, mainly I think they all didn't need to be translated but at least the enemies and friendlies "Enemy sighted, Put your hands up in the air, flank them, etc" battle voices should have been translated to English instead of left in Russian as for some it is hard to know when sneaking up on them if they are telling a joke out loud or telling their friends to watch the gibs from this grenade they are going to throw at the stupid American :P

The lack of text in the game, and on the cut scene's as well made it not really as enjoyable for deaf gamers as others are out today. All this aside I would say it probably is a 7.8 on my scale. If you could continue your game play after the end of the game and it had full voice translations or at least text translations in a chat style box or something a 8.2

EDIT:The spawns are a bit of a problem also... but I think they will be fixed soon as it has been voiced allot lately as a pain. Also when it says "Cellar" as in a loot or bag location it usually means attic... at least for me. Perhaps it is a word lost in translation... dunno but hope that helps someone out there :D

The developers have stated that the spawn rates will be tweaked in the next patch.

I haven't seen any news on when the next patch will be made.

I'm not sure if I want to wait for more patches before I start playing.....

Anyone know how long it will be ill next patch?

You need to check the forums connected with the game. In this case, the news comes from the GSC Game World forums. Apparently, the guess is that the second patch will be released this week.
Patch Notes said:
Preliminary second patch changelist:

Added console command 'sv_listmaps' to view the list of maps queue

Fixed bugs with player's character health in Multi-player

Removed standing dead bodies upon connecting to the game

Fixed inventory items placing system (Free for all and Team play modes)

Changed the enumeration of the game's version

Added the region detection to the auto-patch system

Fixed the crash in some localizations with using numpad

Fixed the crash upon making the screeshot to a saved game

Added the support for additional mouse buttons (now they can be binded to certain actions)

[new] Fixed crash on level "Military warehouse".

[new] Fixed NPC spawning on player's eyes. Then you are fighting "Freedom" on their base, there was NPC spawning near bridge.

[new] Decreased a-life reaction time. Now a-life will spawn new NPC more seldom. Also NPC movement speed decreased, then NPC walk on different level, then player.

The second patch will not erase your saves.

The third patch will, among other things, further improve the AI.
It is also possible that it will enable free play after game ending.

Problems with ATI's cards are being worked on.

Cool, sounds good, hopefully the wait won't be long.

But my biggest problem right now is the fact I can't or at least don't know how to change Shadows in the game. Its been a rule of mine now to always turn them off or as low as possible in gaming, to up the power on other visuals. But this game won't let me even though there are buttons and crap to change it in options...

I'm not alone in this am i?

The important option here is your lighting option, on your basic video tab. If it is "Objects Dynamic Lighting" or "Full Dynamic Lighting" you can adjust the shadows slider in the advanced video options, while if it is "Static Lighting" you won't be able to. I suspect that your game is set on "Static Lighting" since you are unable to adjust shadows, and that is where you want it to be for best performance. Static Lighting uses DirectX 8 for lighting, while the other two options use DirectX 9.

Though, if your computer can handle it, I would recommend sacrificing the other graphical options for lighting. It makes the game much more atmospheric, which is part of the point with S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
