Flash sites

Eh, you are all free to flame me and call me a loser who has nothing better to do in his life than waste his intellectual potential on a completely irrelevant subject, but right now I'm incredibly pissed with what is in my opinion the worst thing that ever struck the web (beside frames and AOL...) - Flash sites. I find them annoying, inane, inefficient and completely useless. They take forever to load, using them once they do load is a nightmare and they posess maybe 10% of HTML's functionality. No matter how much I contemplate this silly concept, I can't imagine why any sane web designer would want to invest so much time into creating something that has no purpose whatsoever except maybe pleasing 14-year-old, "oh, look, pretty colorful picturez" morons. I believe that a good website must be intuitive and functional in order to be good. Overloading the site with unnecessary multimedia content undermines this concept and common sense. A good designer doesn't need any of that animated and colorful shit to make his site look tasteful! Not that it matters any - people will still keep making their stupid Flash sites to impress clueless animation-loving masses and I will still keep reflexively clicking Back button whenever I see the sinister "Loading Site" message and the dreaded progress bar below it. So Flash away!

P.S. No offense to Flash lovers among you. I myself like Macromedia Flash, it's great like all Macromedia software, but that doesn't change the fact that it's BLOODY USELESS!

I disagree. I think that a well done flash site is very impressive looking, if for no other reason than because it's a skill I don't really posses. Plus, as much as we like to believe that content sells itself, it really doesn't. Slapping a shiny interface on your website always helps, even if it only helps first impressions.

I agree.

Just like philosophy, Flash is only there for asthetic reasons. Trying to give it any other purpose in life is just foolish. They're only there for a sparkle effect and a webpage could be designed to be much more efficent and interactive without them. I think it's our practical engineering side that's coming to play here Ratty. All engineers know that computers are only good for the internet and for playing games. Everything else can be done by hand, which we're forced to do in school.

Honestly, if you really want Flash stuff all over the internet, then why don't you just go live at www.newgrounds.com and leave the rest of alone, eh?

Banz0red.

Also, Gwydion is right, content doesn't sell, design does. So where informative sites shouldn't really use Flash, and generally don't, sites that offer entertainment...well...

Compare it to big flashy neon signs. Useful? No, but they do draw in customers. Or annoy them at least.

An occasional Flash animation is acceptable (though I am opposed to that as well), but making the whole site in Flash is insane! Design sells? No matter how interested I am in a game, if I surf over to its website and see it's designed in Flash, I instantly hit Back and decide not to buy that game... ever.

Ratty, you don't buy games, you pirate them.

I already mentioned that site in this thread, so why are you posting it again? Please don't post redundant material in a thread. That's like introducing yourself again to your lover after you two got married. It's just awkward and it doesn't really make any sense at all.

With that said...

post++;

That's not the issue here. And "piracy" is such an ugly word. I prefer the word "theft".

i agree ozrat
flash is there because it has asthetic value.
flash's reason of existing is the same of movie's, music's, even book's...
an artist shows his/her work. for him/herself (maybe to get some praise).

I like Flash because it works at least well in both IE and NS (and Mozillas) and Opera... not like those bad-written Javascripts, and badly used only-IE compatible non-W3.org approved codes, that destroy the whole page, or make them impossible to view/use...
and no... I won't use IE... except for DLing a Mozilla...
