Yes, but if the OP is having trouble around the VC area with a 10mm pistol, then it would be a good idea to back track to the den and get those upgrades for free. They are not exactly small upgrades either, and would help immensely.

If you are low on caps you can get em from Redding casino or from the merchant inside NCR, they probably have around 2000 caps each if I remember correctly. Also you should get a decent combat shotgun for old Cass, he does wonders with one.
