Beginner needs some combat tips - getting a bit frustrated

For two hours now I've been stuck in a catch-22 - can't kill anything because of lack of experience, can't get any experience points from lack of being able to kill anything. I am in the gecko area south of the town, and have managed to lost 1/4 of my hit points on one small gecko. Can't even touch the tough ones. The only other place to go that I can find is an area with a robot which I equally have no chance of killing. Can't solve the quests from town if I don't get past these guys. So what's the trick? I've tried the obvious hit and run technique, but that doesn't work on the geckos as they have more action points in combat than I do. I'd hate to waste my whole Sunday on one measly little scene.

Well first off I hope you make a good habit of saving the game. It's always a good idea to save the game after sucessful combat or any major task or before leaving a locale. That way if you stuff up or get into a nasty random encounter you won't have to retrace your steps too much.
Second off if an opponent is clearly too much just try and run away. Although it can be frustraiting and slow to search out weedy enemies and kill them it's the only way to get a firm grip at the start.
Also what is your character like? If your character just isn't a fighting type you might have to avoid combat - try to get some NPC's on your quest. You haven't said where you are but Sulik is probably the first one you'll get and he's pretty useful in combat.
You'd have to be more specific on your situation, where you are, and your character for better advice.

Don't get too wrapped up in combat. You do have other options. have you spoken to everybody in town? I can recall at least one quest in Klamath that you can complete without combat, and at least one with much weaker foes that the geckos.

More info on your character would be helpful. What equipment have you got, and what are your tag skills? I like to tag small guns and dump all of the skill points gained in my first level or two into it, raising it to 100% or so ASAP. I find it to be a huge advantage at the start of the game (especially for a beginner). Basic survival becomes less of an issue, and you can concentrate on developing your other abilities.

A couple of important notes.

1) The gecko area. You don't have to kill them all. Try to avoid wandering around in that zone - just get to the building. If you are not doing the quest yet, you can go up to the main town after fighting and press Z to rest. That way you will get full HP before fighting more geckos. If you started the quest already, I recommend a wild approach: Run through the zone without stopping anywhere, refill the still while in combat, and run back out. I think that's doable without dying. :-) Then you can collect your reward and start killing the geckos whatever way you see fit and won't have to worry about resting - just full heal whenever you want. (To make this clear, if you are IN the quest and rest, it will fail because you have a time limit)

2) The robot. The robot is crippled, and cannot attack you if you hit'n'run around the zone. Very easy to kill even with a non-melee char, just takes some time.

if you need good weapons, run around broken hills, where you might encounter "a unity patrol fighting mercenaries". this is great, since the unity patrol takes care of the mercenaries very quickly. you'll get stuff like flamethrowers and pancor jackhammers. this is a great help in the early stages of the game.

RE: Beginner needs some combat tips - getting a bit frustrat

If you haven't already, talk to some people who can train you in the ways of combat. Two are in Arroyo and one is in Klamath. It makes it a bit easier to kill those geckos.

You can also go on a Brahmin drive and have the other guards kill stuff at random encounters. Just make sure you haul *expletive deleted* if the caravan get wiped out. Usually happens when we run into super muties and deathclaws.

If you run into moonshiners, you can steal stuff from them. I've been caught stealing from them many times, but they never attacked (just like the random encounter hubologist). I once took 3 jackhammers, 5 combat shotguns, 3 CAWS and enough hooch to put Becky out of business :) in one encounter.

You can also gain experience from doing quests - they are worth lots of exp, so maybe if some quests where you need to fight monsters are too tough, move on to the next town (ie: The Den) and do some simple quests there to gain more exp. Also, as you progress further to new towns, they tend to have better weapons (and armor!) available, so you an probably buy/steal a decent gun at The Den, and then return to Klamath and have an easier time.

No, the Dragon will eventually say that you can't learn anything more from him (at near 100% skill).

RE: Beginner needs some combat tips - getting a bit frustrat

Dragon and Lo Pan can only train you up 20% each (4 x 5%) or until your skill exceed 100%. I learned to fight from BOTH, I usually have positive karma when I first reach SF. Train under Dragon until he can teach me no more. Then I leave, steal candy from babies, tie women to railroad tracks and generally be evil. I once shot Father Tully for snoring too loud :D (no hintbook for me :(). Once I'm evil, I train with Lo Pan. :)

John Sullivan, in Klamath, can improve your unarmed and melee skills no matter how high. Too bad, he only gives you pointers once. :(

RE: Beginner needs some combat tips - getting a bit frustrat

Thanks for the tips. My character is strength six, endurance 7 and agility 6 plus a couple of others I can't remember. I beefed up lockpicking, melee weapons and healing skills - trying to be sort of a thiefy kind of character. So, probably a pretty average sort of character all 'round. I have Sulik and Vic now, but I find it pretty frustrating that I can't really tell them what to do in combat. Sulik seems to have the right idea but Vic...well, he's another story altogether. There have been a couple of times where I was ready to give up the game as I'm finding the combat pretty darned annoying - once you're in a situation you can't run away (well, you can, but only in increments of eight steps). I guess I'll have to load up a bit more on small guns, but I haven't got a lot of ammo and Vic is using it up at a pretty fast rate.

RE: Beginner needs some combat tips - getting a bit frustrat

If you've already tagged Melee, better to spend your skill points there than in an untagged Small Guns. Also, reading books can increase your Small Guns (up to around 90% or so), which won't require you to spend skill points. And if you're really bent on increasing your weapons skills, you could pick up the Tag! perk at level 12 (I'd recommend tagging Energy Weapons at that point), or you could go with Mutate! at level 9 and change one of your traits to One Hander... that would at least boost your skill with pistols and such, and make a nice complement to your Melee attacks.

Since you need to make physical contact with the enemy, you'd be well served by beefing up your agility/action points. You can grab the Bonus Move perk as early as level 6, Action and Increase Agility at level 12. Both will increase your mobility, which is very important for you.

I'm not one for melee weapons, but it seems most who are favor the super sledge.

RE: Beginner needs some combat tips - getting a bit frustrat

If you want to use melee weapons primarially getting the Slayer perk is highly recommended. Unfortunately by the time it becomes availble you'll probably find you really need to be using energy weapons.

RE: Beginner needs some combat tips - getting a bit frustrat

After 5 ranged fighters, I've found a melee character highly enjoyable. Should anyone be interested, I printed his current stats out to http://koti.mbnet.fi/~saboteur/fallout/Sajag2.TXT .

As for melee weapons... Damn, there are so many! The super sledge might be a reasonable choice in the later stages of the game, but you should never overlook any melee weapons - it's fun to fool around with them. :-) It's much easier than with a new cool gun - you don't have to worry about ammo.

RE: Beginner needs some combat tips - getting a bit frustrat

You can read books? Do you mean the gun magazines Ive been finding in the outhouses? How do you read them?

RE: Beginner needs some combat tips - getting a bit frustrat

Simply use them from your inventory as you would any other item - like stimpacks.

RE: Beginner needs some combat tips - getting a bit frustrat

From your inventory, click & hold, select the action icon (or is it the "use" icon?)... whatever, the open hand. Your Small Guns, First Aid, Science, Repair and Outdoorsman skill can all be improved with the appropriate books. Eats up a few hours... I think your IN affects how long it takes, as well as how much of a bonus you get. You can also pick up the Comprehension perk to increase the books' effectiveness. I'm pretty sure books can improve your skills until they hit about 90%... after that, sell them instead of reading them, or they just go to waste.

[font size=1" color="#FF0000]LAST EDITED ON Oct-06-01 AT 04:04PM (GMT)[p]Never forget, if you really need help, quick save before every move and make targetted shots, you miss alot more (I think) and you get shunned by your fellow gamers but who cares? In reality you will never miss, and I find that it helps to have at least a luck of 7 and the critical hit perks that allow you to do 50 hps of damage with a pipe rifle. A good perception helps, too, and one thing, never use burst mode unless you have a minigun, only two of your bullets actually hit the enemy most of the time, though I did do 460 hps of damage with one burst from a H&K 90c.
Oh, and if you really need xp read the Games Gomain walkthrough on this web site and it will tell you to make your way down to San Francisco and accept the stealing vertibird plan quest, its pretty easy if you can knock the single guard at Navarro unconcious, there you can get 23500 xp for completing the quest and get advanced power armor, you should be set for the rest of your early game if you return to Klamath and pick up there.

RE: Beginner needs some combat tips - getting a bit frustrat

go to ncr to your south all the way down and go to the ladie that says help this guy is gona blow this place up. all you have to do is let the guy blow the place up and then fix this computer and you get 3000 exp you can keep repairing it and you get 3000 everytime
