FO2: Ironman Build

Thanks, didn't know that. (Hmm, would have helped me with that mutant with the rocket launcher).

Adjusted the FAQ to only talk about dead NPC bodies.

Very good, except you say not to rely on drugs. Drugs can actually be very useful for getting extra power during a fight, and the negative effects can always be rested off. Also, you don't have to use the drug right before you level up. You can use them after you level up, and then go back to the character screen, and the perk will be available. Don't know if you knew that.

I didn't mean not to use them at all (I used them plenty in my game) just not to use them to make perk requirements. But as you mention, I now realize you can do as you say and simply avoid going into the character screen until you've boosted your stats.

You can still go into the character screen before boosting your stats. Just click cancel on the perk window, and it will appear next time you try to open your character screen. Every time the perk window comes up, it will refresh the choices based on your stats. This works with both the positive and negative affects of drugs. If you take mentats to get bonus perception to meet the Sniper perk requirements, you can do that. If you rest a few hours and lose the bonus perception, and suppose your original perception was 8, then you wouldn't be able to get Sniper because the perk system does not care what your original stats are, only your current stats.

Hardcore FO

Hey fellow fallout fans

Does anyone else play FO2 'hardcore' style? By this
i mean without saving - except at the end of your
gaming session. I highly reccomend it as a style of
play. Anyone who has played Diablo 2 Hardcore
will know what i mean. Intense, exciting, horriffic!

Playing this way of course means staying alive is of
the very highest priority. For me it means EN 10,
2 ranks of toughness and lifegiver perk ASAP!
Still, its a tough challenge.

Anyone have any good strategies for this style of play?

No. I Play most games where i save and if i die i just reload. But Sometimes i feel like giving myself only one chance to beat the game. So if i die once then its over

I Save when im going to bed though. :D Or going to eat or do other stuff

Could someone please explain what is meant by "FO2 ironman build"? I didn't see such a mod in the downloads section.

'Ironman' is a term used when you play a game without reloading if you screw up. i.e. You die, you start a new game. Personally, I think Per's suggestion of hitting yourself over the head with a hammer whenever you die would be less frustrating, but that's just me.

What about stealing? It rarely directly gets you killed, but it usually means you have to take on the whole town or get the heck out of there and never come back. Is reloading until your Steal attempt succeeds allowed?

Sounds like a lot of fun. I wanna give it a shot. Is one supposed to have the game or combat difficulty set to hard tho? Ive played thru fallout1 on hard combat difficulty once, but never went back because of the way it was implemented - the opponents simply did more damage than was possible with their weapons. I found that a frustratingly cheap way to increase difficulty. A better solution would have been to just increase the amount of enemies, or increase their skill level and make them use more aimed shots... or give them more action points. Anything that makes sense, instead of just making their attacks magically more powerful. Oops, went off on a rant there.

I usually play Ironman - I found it actually less frustrating than to load every time something goes wrong.
Actually, it allows real roleplaying instead of cheating to make everything go as a player wants.

Glad To see this thread still getting hits.

It definitely can be done in Fallout 2 on Hard Combat as I did it.

You just have to be tough as hell (hit points, damage resistance, and best armor available to you) and learn when to run away.

Inevitably sometimes you're just going to get a bad break and that will be that, but it's still a lot of fun.

I think that the key to enjoying Ironman is not expecting to survive :) .
When I played F1, I died a lot, but it made the game feel more complete - like death was a good end of the story too :) .

Yeah I agree that in many ways it's in fact a more fun way to play the game. There's none of the tedious reload-until-you-get-lucky grinding.

I also agree that death can be as good an ending as any. It's supposed to be a dangerous post-apocalyptic world, after all.

I think once my current game is done I'm gonna try this style for sure.

I would find it cool if people who play this way posted their adventures here. Including, definitely, the ones that ended in death. It's cool stuff to read about.

May favorite Ironman death of all-time was when I blew myself up at the one door in the Temple of Trials. I got cute and set the timer for :30 and it went off immediately, thus concluding the shortest Ironman game in history. Had a good laugh.

Hey - good ironman FAQ capt vee. I apreciated it alot
as i also play ironman. I dunno about anyone else but
now im addicted and save and load just seems a lame
way to play.

Ive been trying to finish an ironman game with a H2H
character for ages now. Its so bloody hard. When
you have to run up and take burst fire in the face you
crap your load every time! The only time i ever made
a H2H character that worked well was with jinxed and
H2H evade. But jinxed spells death for ironmen as
you inevitably lose a turn on critical faliure and get
pasted.

I go for EN 10, toughness (2), better criticals, and
then as much lifegiver as i can get! I dont take gifted
as consider it overpowered. Last try i got to lvl 10
and NCR, and got splatted by the cop who tries to
blow the power generator up. I had 59% DR and
he criticaled me for 112! noooooooooooo!
