Vault 13 random encounter???

I was wandering through the wastes when I had a random encounter. There was the weird shaped stone, then next I was in Vault 13, at least all the doors said 13 on them. I started searching around and I used science on one of the computers. It said the water chip broke, and that the Vaults water supply would run out within a couple of months. Now I'm worried that I did something to the Deathclaws. What is this encounter about???

You did not do anything to the deathclaws. It is an easter egg that refers to Fallout 1. If you have played that game then the first part of the main quest is to find a replacement water chip for your vault because theirs is broken. The same one you just broke.

You didn't get the Solar Scorcher? Not only does it do a healthy amount of damage, it's also enviromentally friendly. You'll be saving the world in two ways. It's right there on the floor of the weapons storage room. Taking it will teach great-great-grandpappy not to leave energy weapons lying around.

Also, it's a reference to the episode of Star Trek (the original series) called "Guardian of Forever," where Kirk, Spock and "Bones" travel back to the 1960's.

That is an easter egg. Don't worry, you didn't do anything wrong. There is a weapon called the Solar Scorcher in the weapons storage room in V13. It only works when it is day out in the fallout world, but it does good damage and cuts people in half nicely.
