Font "styling" - need help

I think I'm posting this in the right section of NMA.

Anyway, I need some help with "styling" some letters of font SerrpentineDBol.
What I want to do exactly is to make letters look like these:

(I mean to make them look like this - "shine". Not the planet contour.)

A friend of mine mentioned some programs, but I hate googling for something I don't know much about. Said Photoshop isn't really good for that, if you're a newbie (which I obviously am).
So, if anyone could recommend some program for this, please, do so.

Well, what I exactly want to do is to add "Wiki" under this.
I'm "making" it for OGame wikia, so I got the font and everything, just can't figure out how to make letters like these.
I don't understand much what you wrote (hehe), but I'll try something tomorrow with GIMP.

There are tons of tutorials online for things like this. Experiment with some keywords on google for Gimp or Photoshop.

I know my stumbleupon account gets wayyy too many. If I find a good one I'll send it your way.

That really everything ? That should be possible. Maybe if you like I can try my hands on it and see how far I come.

*I missunderstood you maybe with some point. But from what I get is that you want this shiny-metalic look on the text. So add wiki on the original text and give it the same "style". Should be possible afterall. Even with gimp.
 
The text looks like it has gradient color fill, either emboss or shadow, and maybe a contour. Sth like that is very simple to do in photoshop.

That's exactly what I want.
Crni, I saw your works in PS, they're great. Don't want to bother, but if you have spare time, you can try.
I basically want to add "Wiki" in the same font and style under this logo - similarly to what is done on The Vault logo, with Fallout in original, and Wiki in that font..

Well, google on how to add those effects to the text, there have to be a plenty of tutorials. It's been a loong time since I've used PS so I don't remember the details.

GIMP and PS have similar capabilities, but GIMP is less user-friendly and more confusing, imo.

Try a diagonal gradient overlay, stroke and emboss.
 
Oh and BTW, if you do want the translucent background to save as translucent, don't forget to save it as PNG.
 
I experimented a bit with GIMP and this is what came out of it. I hope it is somewhat the direction you were looking for.

If there is something you need changed just say it
 
If you want to mess about with Photoshop all you need to do is type the text into the page, then right-click the text layer and choose "blending options". You'll get a bunch of different things you can tweak, like bevel/emboss, drop shadows, etc.

This is about 2 or 3 minutes of work... Photoshop is pretty easy to use when it comes to customizing text:

Getting an exact replica would just be a matter of tweaking the colour and font size (the default SerpentineDBol isn't quite like that).
