Food in Fallout world

I think most of you are forgeting an important aspect to this food buisness...
Your not always alone when you travel the wasteland..

If you think collecting food and finding room to store it for your self is a pain in the ass think of the hassle it would cause to do the same for two tribals a fat vic and a giagantic supermutant,...

Marcus alone probably consumes about 3 small children for breakfast...
allthough the thought of the lack of food could lead to some interesting in group disputes and situations...

"Say you guys sure your not hungry, you didnt pack any food with you from the last trip?"
"No Boss not hungry at all."
"ok whatever,... say you guys seen dog meat around I could have sworn he was with us when we left the hub."

Like alot of other people have posted Id rather chose a fun less tedious game over a realistic boring one. A good idea but just too many damn problems in the end.

It's more like:

"Have you seen Vic lately?"

(Dogmeat belches)

Heh....heh....heh
Don't forget the Iguana on a stick (MMMM!! Taste like a Chicken they said.) stand on every street corner. Or Dunton's Meat Jerky made from 11 secret recipe by Colonel Dunton (last time i heard, he still a Corporal).

And romeo Say to his beloved juliet: Kulo tresno karo sampeyan.

I have an idea! Why not make the food and water thing an option on the prefrences menu?

Well the way I think of it as. Maybe I just like to pretend but, I think they are eating when they travel on the map. It is just incorporated into the travel time. Sure they find food there are so many random encounters they've got to come across dead pigs or rats or deathclaws( mmmmmm...). And when your in a town and stay at a hotel or something, a continental breakfast is served in the morning. And when you choose to eat items like iguana on a stick or chitlins, that is just a snack and that's why it replaces few HP. But if you put something like food in, then you have to have shower, take a crap, rest from walking all day, change your clothes, and wack it. And then next thing we know it's The Sims. Nothing bad about your idea, but the extra's (besides killing people) in Fallout were good enough for me. I prefer a game where I can kill a camp full of raiders, sell their shit, celebrate by getting plastered and buying new equipment( to kick ass even harder) , then go buy some prostitutes and gamble all my money away. I mean shit, if you didn't have to eat or crap or drink would you do it anyway. Sure sometimes it's fun taking a huge crap for some people(not me) and they like to eat every once in a while. But if you didn't have to all the time , you wouldn't.

Well, that sounds like "Option: Real Time or Turn Based". But I think naaahhh!!! Perhaps the best idea were when we carry food we could travel faster than without one.... And bigger outdoorsman skill make you consume fewer food. But all this ruined the fallout athmosphere..

Anyone remember Betrayal at Krondor? Great game, only problem being that you ended up using most of your inventory carrying rations. Unless you wanted to stop at every town, you needed to carry lots of rations. And what you could carry wasn't determined by strength, it was a "you have this many inventory slots" thing. And god help you if you run out of food in the last chapter, and have killed everyone, and can't find enough food to rest up and take out the boss.

But I digress.

Food consumption would be a pain in the ass. I mean, really, sure, make it the basis of a few quests, make it heal HP, whatever, just don't make the character have to stock up on food. I mean, while we're doing that, why not implement a balanced diet system, so the character needs to carry more than just a canteen and a lot of drymeat? Yeah, you need to pick your meals from a balanced meal table. And so forth, increasing the "little stuff that annoys you" factor, until there is a base chance of falling over in combat due to uneven terrain, or whatever.

That is a terrific idea in my opinion. That would also increase the value and usefulness of several things I was thinking of adding to the game... little modules that add onto your PipBoy that increase functionality. For example, if you get a motion sensor module, you can install it and toggle that in the map screen, without giving the PC (sorry, I use PC and 'you' interchangeably) a hassle and using the active item slot. A geiger module could easily, in real-time alert the player to radioactive food and drink. Storage of water could either be in regular cantines, or if you wanted to get really technical, here's a terrific idea:
Instead of stupid litte Micro-fusion Cells and Small Energy Cells, instead of batteries that run down on the geiger counter and radar unit (or PipBoy, for that matter), just use hydrogen stored in the form of sodium borohydride. Then, as you use the hydrogen to power your equipment, the excess pure water could be added to your cantine. What's nice is that it simplifies things in the long run (powering your car, ammo for energy weapons, water, etc.). You can refill your borohydride at every town, and/or, if you get solar panels on your car, then the car recharges the hydrogen supply. Of course, some of the energy from the panels would have to go to a dehumidifier unit to extract water from the air, so it can be split by electrolysis. Also, the PC can buy containers to put inside the car that contain water so the electrolyzer and player can use/refill with. If the player becomes dehydrated, their hp lowers, stats lower temporarily (just as rads do), and you lack the ability to run.

Enough about water, though. Here's how food should go. You can buy vegetables and meats, etc. from vendors in each city/town/village. You can also scavenge. The neat thing is that you can tell your party members to scavenge. Each party member should have SPECIAL stats and skill percentages just as the PC does. If the PC reads a book/manual and is done with it, you can hand it to your NPC's for them to read and increase their skills. Also, depending on their speech and intelligence, they can convey their abilities to the other characters. Anyway, you can tell everybody in your party to scavenge, and depending on their outdoorsman skill (determines how much and quality of food) they will bring back some food and water. That way you don't have to worry too much about running out of rations/water in the desert. And if you have the geiger counter module, it automatically scans for rads. If you have, say, a lil' chemist kit, or a mini-spectrometer in your PipBoy, you can also detect poisonous chemicals. Finally, another characteristic, disease, should be factored into the player's statistics. Pathogens can be detected with a rather bulky microscope, or later in the game you can add a micro-magnifier module to your PipBoy to scan the substance/area. Depending on your science, doctor and/or first aid skills, intelligence, outdoorsman (to a lesser extent), and perception, you will find (or not find) bacteria and viruses in the target substance. Your equipment and outdoorsman skill also determines how many times in a time period this is checked.

Also, on the 'stillsuit' line of thinking, wearing Power Armor will decrease your use of water by a large factor. It will recycle your water, and distill/filter the urine. Of course, it sounds disgusting, but astronauts do this all the time, and power armor was made at least some fifty years from now. To think of the advances of polymer technology; permeable membranes, possibly even selectively permeable membranes. Of course, this would add a little complexity to the game, but I believe it would serve to add more depth to the game, and more fun in the process.

Yay! Micro-managing, everything that makes a CRPG dreary as hell to play.

*sigh* Another one who doesn't get the setting. Here's a hint: It's not Blade Runner.

I think ur ideas are good, but water shouldn't be dat important, cuz such a detail will most certaintly get tedious after a short time of playing. D charachter could rather bring bottles from cities[filled to the brink w/water], and be able to drive a motorbike or scooter or such, leavin ur NPCs somewhere or have another kind of vehicle to support dem...

What's that sound? That's the sound of your taxes being wiped on someone's ass and then burnt.
