Free antivir for Vista

Well, I wanted to do a comparison myself, but since Avast! first took hours to download, and then failed to install properly for me, I'll chalk all this up to "Personal preference" ;)

(not that I think Avast is bad; TMM it is the most effective free scanner on the market, but I just had performance problems using that one)

I personally like AVG - but Avast is OK too

However I turn off any active scanning of email (i turn off email scanning altogether as I use web mail) and files - i usually only turn on a once-a-day full scan early in the morning. I do way to much development and other activities that hits files all the time to deal with the performance hit of active virus scans while I use my system.

i'd rather take your little download problem (and probably followed by a corrupt install), over the "oops, i deleted system files because i thought they were a virus and now your system will not boot until you booted off a cd and replaced the files manually"-update that AVG pulled this year...

call it personal preference. ;)

(but no, i'm basing it pretty much 100% on the compared performance & ease of daily use)

I'm using Avira almost-free (shareware) on my win 2000. It's ok, but I can't recommend it, it slows up the PC a bit.

Alright people, just for the record, I went with Avast (if anyone is still interesting with the original purpose of the thread).

I've been using nod32. It failed to clear some worms. I installed avast and took care of the problem. should i use avast instead of nod32?
