Frigid Wrath!

The Vault Dweller

always looking for water.
Anyone ever thought having RPG character's visit exotic locations made purely one idea's of temperature as repetitive? You know the volcanoes with lava or frozen wastes of ice with generic challenges like avoiding falling icicles? Well those kinda exist in real life too...

Well I'd been having a great time up until 11am on Thursday. The weather was incredibly unseasonable with temperatures more like Fall and Spring through most of what is currently "winter". Ive had lots of time off with my college break and eagerly waiting to write my much put-off fan-fiction. Then it happened...

On Wednesday night my area got its first significant snowfall that turned into freezing rain. Normally this would have happened months back and not in January. I was fine driving home since it was still snow. The next day however the power went out just as I got out of the shower. Wondering what was wrong I went outside. Through the night the whole environment had become coated in a layer of glistening ice about a half-inch thick. Constantly I could hear branches tearing and snapping then falling to the ground with a crash. I realized the power must have been out due to a falling tree. Thinking it would be temporary I went back inside. Later I was planning on visiting the relatives when the seriousness of the situation dawned on me. The road outside my house was blocked both ways by bent tree's that struggled to hold themselves up amid the ice adorning them. One one side a tree was already resting precariously on the power lines...

The power outage went on through 'til the next day at 5pm. I spent the night hiding under my blankets with no heating, the temperature going below freezing (no big deal as Ive had much worse) dreading the fact that I was gonna get no shower the next day. It was at least fun to use candles for a night...everything lit that way is so surreal. Then on Friday night after having power restored things got worse. It rained...this time its warmth caused the ice to be shed violently from the tree's and ice came down in droves making echoing shattering sounds through the night...when the power went out again. Saturday I was able to leave after the fallen timber had been removed. Though everywhere other tree's were ready to fall or hugh low across the road.

Currently there's more rain expected for tomorrow. Im online for the first time in four days.

Anyone else living near me who's had the same problems?

Wow,
The Vault Dweller

I'm not sure where you live but here in Anchorage this happened on the 29th of Septermber. Very heavy and wet snow coming down fast. You could hear the trees breaking all over the place and limbs coming off. I decided to take a walk.

Here are some pictures from it if anyone cares to look:

What are you two complaining about now? You should visit North Dakota sometime.

No way that's Alaska! I've seen more snow in my boots after snowboarding. Man, you two really need to visit North Dakota.

North Dakota snow is impressive I admit. But the lake effect snow in Michigan's Upper Peninsula or around Buffalo NY makes anything you or I have ever seen look like a light dusting.

As for power outages, the ice was so bad here last Thursday in central PA that we lost our Fox broadcast. I was heartbroken that I couldn't watch my OC!! :P

We've been having really freakish weather since all of this fake global weather stuff really started getting underway. If I just keep thinking it's fake, it will go away, it will.

*looks out the window*

Nope, no rain or snow here. We haven't had a single snow flake since early 2004. Winters have become incredibly warm here as of late. But Colt is right - this cannot possibly be caused by global warming, because there is no such thing.

What's with all the weather threads lately?

It should be snowing here at this time of year and yet it is raining.. Sweden = fit chicks and snow. I feel ripped off. At least 50% ripped off.

Didn't you know? NMA is populated by 70-year-old grannies who have nothing better to do than discuss weather, especially after the latest season of Passions got prohibited by CDC due to potentially hazardous amount of stupidity demonstrated by its characters. Those NMAers who aren't 70-year-old grannies are usually 17-year-old nerds who consider discussing weather a refreshing change from endlessly debating game hardware, Linux, MC68020 bus cycles, northbridge to southbridge capacity, length of Gimli's beard and Drizzt Do'Urden's real hair color, especially since everything has been said on such important and profound topics as the number of lines it takes to code Dead or Alive breast bouncing in C++.

You forgot the 18 year old gun wonk. ;)

The weather affects how all of us live our lives (aside from Vault Dweller) so I think it's a valid topic of discussion especially with all of the weird shit that's been going on regarding it. - Colt

I was bragging about warm weather during xmas in another thread. Since a week and a half ago I brag no more.

I'm the second one with
nerd[NMA_user].age = 18;

Hmn... you need to work on your coding style. That definition didn't make too much sense.

Especially since you didn't specify a value for NMA_user and didn't declare nerd.

This got me thinking. My area (normally below 0 celcius daily) has had above freezing temperatures for months now in incredibly unseasonable weather. Its actually a lot like California where I moved here from. Ironically California is getting mass amounts of rain that are causing record floods...the amount of precipitation is akin to here in Pennsylvania. Have the weather patterns switched sides of the country?

So please comment on if your area is having normal weather for this year or its abnormal. I want to see if this could be worldwide.

Sincerely,
The Vault Dweller

Ok fine: (I didn't write back to the users.dat file, but I don't feel like changing it now.)

Code:
#include <conio.h>
#include <iomanip.h>
#include <time.h>
#include <confx2.h>
#include <iostream.h>
#include <fstream.h>

struct user
{
bool virgin;
int age;
char name[30];
int joined;
int posts;
char location[60];
};

main()
{
ifstream user_file, user_data;
int num_users=0,NMA_user= -1;
user nerd[10000];

user_data.open(“master.dat”,ios::binary)
if(user_data.fail())
{
cout<<”You suck!”<<endl;
}
else
{
mapfile.read ((char*)&num_users, sizeof (num_users));
}
user_data.close();
if(num_users > 0)
{
user_file.open(“users.dat”,ios::binary);
if(user_file.fail())
{
cout<<”Ashmo likes the cock!”<<endl;
}
else
{
for(int i=0;i<num_users;i++)
{
mapfile.read ((char*)&nerd[i], sizeof (nerd));
if(strcmp(nerd[i].name,”calculon00”))
{
NMA_user=i;
}
}
if(NMA_user != -1)
{
nerd[NMA_user].age = 18;
}
else
{
cout<<”Renew!”<<endl;
}
}
user_file.close();
}
return 0;
}

That's a wee bit better, but with all the bloat you kinda look like a potential MS employee.

I hear Gus has been 'equipping' Jebus four times a day. *wink, wink*

Shut it Rat! Or I'll tell them how you know all this..

Yeah, Marek is right. It snowed in November, a lot, but all of it mysteriasly vanished in early December. No snow since, only cold and rain. I think it's the first January/New year's in my life without snow. Global warming, yeah. Feels like late summer over here.
