The battle between the consoles is going to probably be primarily between Sony and Nintendo. The Xbox may sound techincally impressive, but Microsoft fucked up pretty bad at E3 by most accounts, and much of the anticipation for the Xbox has already begun to wane. The problem is, they don't have a killer app for this system. Sony has Metal Gear, Nintendo has Rougue Leader, and the promise of more Zelda Games. Microsoft can't promise any games like that at the minute, except for maybe Halo. Nintendo is also releasing its system, which costs 100 bucks less, five days before the Xbox, and that's gonna take a lot of steam out of the Xbox's release.
I also believe that people who like console games are going to chose between Sony and Nintendo, who are known for making great console games. Microsoft has to this point developed mostly for the pc, and many console gamers aren't terribly fond of pc games, because of all the lousy pc ports they get. I may be wrong about that, but it's just a hunch.
All in all, my predictions for the console war is:

1.Sony
2.Nintendo
3.Microsoft at a distant 3rd.

Anyone else have any thoughts on how they'll finish?

Certainly

1. Sony retains their lead by a healthy margin
2. Nintendo makes gains on Sony, but remains in second place still
3. Sega software predictably sells well, and they surprise everyone with the anouncement of their new system (Already hinted at in interviews)
4. Microsoft find they can't go toe to toe with Nintendo's fanboys or Sony's undeserved success, and the X-Box becomes known as a knock-off of the PS2 having mainly ported games with a few unimportant first/second party titles.

Yet another piece of hyped "Temporaryware" that will have main-company support dropped a la SegaCD and Dreamcast? There's been numerous games that, since Sega has dropped the Dreamcast now, switched over to another platform. Heh, I think the only people who would get burned this time would be complete gaming newbies and those who feel comfortable by having their wallet raped.

RE: Certainly

I'm by no means a Sega supporter, but I'd rather Nintendo compete against a proved loser than an uncertainty like Microsoft.

RE: Certainly

I was reviewing all the games announced in e3 for the x-box, and i have to admit that i was disapointed. Halo is fine, but Planetside appears to be much better, they only have a killer app, Matrix, that could well suck but it`s going to help their sales, and the only game that impressed me was Project-Ego (that one really impressed me). That`s not much...
