Games that make you tense?

The bioshock 5 thread made me want to ask forumgoers for some advice on games that make you tense, if thats the right word to use.

Basicly games that are hard and put fear into you and make you decide if you can keep taking the abuse or run and hide like a little baby. System Shock 2 beat me, i never beat it. Resident evil the remake, on Wii, beat me. Too friggin tense.

I almost wet my pants in RE Nemesis, but i did beat it.

I could care less if i beat them or not, the experience was worth it, and i still doubt myself every time I consider booting these games up. Ive had disk in hand, ready to boot up or install, and totally pussed out and put it back in the sleeve. Isnt that great?

Anyway, there are a million games out there i probably havent played, so if you could recommend any, please do! It doesnt have to be a horror game, Operation Flashpoint made me sweat a few times.

EDIT:

Few more games i just remembered fall into this category:
VTM:Bloodlines, the haunted house first playthrough
Stalker:SOC scared me but i beat it.
Jagged Alliance 2 had its moments.
Thief games always beat me

Amnesia: The Dark Descent only game to ever make me literally shut down my pc, go into my room, and hide. XD

"In Soviet Russia, you don't beat games, games beat you!"
That kinda thing?
I dunno man most games now a days are too easy to really be challenging.
I guess I'd suggest Populous: The Beginning, real hard game.

Or if you're talking about scary then I really have no idea man, most games just shocks you, like popping up a zombie which makes you go "AH" for 2 seconds then you're all cool again.

Sooooo.... Silent Hill 2 and 3 I guess. Those two really made me fucking spaz out.
And one of my friends keep telling me to play some game called the Clocktower which is suppose to make your skin crawl.

I love that game series, the death scenes made me have nightmares for weeks when I was younger, good times.

If you're talking just the psychological effect and not difficulty as such, I'd say STALKER, esp. CoP, it's no walk in the park at any time. Also stuff like Doom 3 or Dead Space where things are designed to jump at you the moment you turn to face the other way.

VtM:B haunted house.
Alien vs Predator (the original) as a marine.
Counterstrike when playing a cup match against a worthy adversary.

yeah it doesnt have to be horror, i love the games where tension builds, or there is uncertainty.

One example is the Silent Hunter series. Sure, submarines in WW2 probably doesnt sound much fun, but it grew on me the first time I was chased deep and mercilessly depth charged for an hour. Ping!...... Ping!..... BAM! BOOM! "Bulkhead damaged sir!" "We're taking water sir!"

Good stuff.

Hmm ok.
Well, The Warriors for PS2 could create some tensions when I had to run from the cops without any team-mates and no drugs.
Especially that trainyard level. Man there were cops and gang members everywhere beating each other up and me and my gang tried to sneak past them when my team-mates just ran off to join the fray.
Facepalm at friendly AI.

Zombie Panic IIRC is also a game that makes one go "HOOOOLYYYY SHIIIIIIIIIIIIT!!!!!!!" when one of the zombies pop up.
The zombies has a fuck load of health and if the player is hit then he turns into a zombie himself.
Try surviving to the end of the round in that.
Scary shit mon'.

Very few games manage to make me tense anymore.

The latest game to do that though, was Eversion, though it never amounted to more than a uneasy feeling of creepiness.

I did love the ending, though.

Hmm, the warriors eh? I should check that out. The 70s hair kept me away til now.

Sua, online games hell yeah. Spent some time in TWL ladders for Americas Army. Defence was always more tense, we would just camp!

My first boom n zoom kill online in IL2 Sturmovich was one of the most heart pounding moments in an online game, that and PKing (or getting PKed)in the early days of Ultima Online.

Rapelay can be tense, what if your wife/gf/roomate walks in!?

Is that game based on the movie The Warriors? Because that's a great concept for game. The movie is a 1970s cult classic.

just finished shellshock 2 on hard with a pistol only run, that was extremely tense, I had a few times where I felt like turning tail, and gettin out of dodge so to say.

Yup. :)
Great game.
But I dunno really.
Movie to game almost never work so don't get your hopes up.
I don't remember the game 100% but I'm sure it had some stuff that contradicted the film.
But it has more backstory to all characters which is really nice.

Is Shellshock 2 fun? I played the first game and loved it because it's 'Nam, but the second one IIRC is something of a horror game with zombies right?

Shellshock two was an OK game, but it got repetitive at about the middle of the fourth level, and a lot of it was jump scares, or should I say the same jump scare repeated about twelve times. not to mention that there is almost no replay value what so ever. I didn't really get attached to any of the characters, mostly because they would die about ten minuets after I met them. The most annoying thing was the fact that no matter where you were hiding the enimey would always know exactly were you were, find you and kill you, but I did enjoy most the game and would recommend it for people to try, but I highly recommend that you rent it, not buy it. also a little side thing, how the hell dose a heavily armed Kevlar vest wearing VC die when you cough on them, yet a topless crazy man with cloth pants, and no headgear can take a rocket to the groin no problem?

The Cradle level in Thief 3 was amazingly intense.

Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of The Earth also had some nail-biting moments, specifically the hotel chase sequence.

System Shock 2 was awesome on its own but I read an account somewhere of a multiplayer session that was even more awesome: Two guys were playing coop, one as a marine and the other guy as the hacker using teamspeak or somesuch. Anyway, the hacker knelt down by a box to open it while the marine was supposed to keep his back. The dude playing marine then proceeded to whip out the wrench and start hammering the hacker with it while moaning "I'm SOOORRRRYYYY" over teamspeak which resulted in the other guy falling from his chair with fright.

Always wanted to try SS2 coop after that :)

Remember it was scary as hell during the first part but then you get guns and it just turned into a generic shoot 'em up.
Stopped playing it because of boredom.
Did it get scary again later on?

There were some interesting moments, mainly involving "boss" monsters, but all in all - no.
