Geck time limit

First time out of the vault
Is there a time limit in obtaining the geck? I played this game once before and never had an issue with time but this time around I keep getting the elder from Arrayo (or whatever) popping up saying the "tribe is dying, get the freakin geck already". (3 times already) I also heard that there was a 13 year time limit on getting it.

Is this true? I started at 20 years old and am now 22 and only around a 3rd of the way through the game. I like travelling around but maybe it's not possible to be so free with my time.

Can someone confirm this? Also, what happens if the tribe bites it cause I took too long? Not able to finish the game maybe? That would be a crime IMHO.

The 13 year limit is true. Don't worry about the elder or Akunin, though make sure to try to keep about 1 year (given you have the car) to finish loose ends I guess. You can porbably still finish the thing with much less time then that though.

Thanks Red. Time limit sucks though. As for the car; I tend to use it as a mobile storage cabinet and park it roughly close to the town or area I am in and travel by foot to nearby areas. I am affraid of running out of fuel in the middle of the desert and heaving the car stranded until I find another cell.

It's been 2 and 1/2 years since I played the game and have trouble remembering but I have been to 5 major towns and their quests so far so I "think" that puts me roughly 1/3 of the way through. Is that right?

It all depends on how you play Fallout 2, whether you like to do every quest, or you do the minimum to get by. So, I or, no one else can possibly tell how far you are. I'll take a guess and say you're not 1/3 done... I'd take a guess and just say like 1/10th done.

Porn IS cheaper than dating for sure.

I like to do as many quests as I can complete and all of them preferably so maybe you are right and I am 1/10 of the way through. At that rate though, I will never make it under the time limit of 13 years. Any time saving tips other than use the car for traveling more? I also have taken to using the PIP boy as a form of pause button while thinking a process through to save time. I think travel is the biggest time eater though. Also I need to stop resting until healed and use my doctor skill more often.

I hate time limits!!

I really don't see your problem.

Will the game end after 13 years of game time? Yes. Is that a bad/stupid/mean thing? NO. You see, even if you do all of the quests in FO2, and I mean all of them, you really shouldn't need more than 3 or 4 years of game time. Really. No kidding.

Of course, some gamers just like to endlessly wander the wasteland in search of yet another pack of Mantis or Bootleggers or whatever...

I hate time limits!!

Wait until you discover that your character can not advance beyond level 99! :P

Well Blade, I am 3 yrs old in fallout time and have had 4 warnings from the elder already that time is running out. I have done all of Arroyo, Gecko, Redding, Den, Modoc and a fair amount of Vault city so far as well as a number of randoms so that is where I am now. The warnings are worrying me though. Also at level 10 so not very strong yet.

Those dreams don't mean shit, they're just there to scare you.

Yeah, you're not far at all, but you won't use 13 years, trust me.

"You got to be taking life slower, mahn." Dont worry about the time limit. You'll be able to finish the game before the time runs out, no matter how long you procrastinate. You'd have to roam the desert mindlessly for weeks - real time - to run out of time. You'd lose your patience first. You'll do. Don't worry about running out of fuel either, there's plenty of cells in the game - to many, if you ask me. Don't worry about anything. Even if for some reason you manage to somehow exceed the time limit... well, we can always restart, can't we.

Really, I don't see a problem. You've got 13 friggin years, that's enough to complete the game 4 times if you wanted to.

Meh, I liked the time limit in FO1, it gave you a more realistic approach to the game...

Agreed.. I remember being seized by unbearable panic while searching for the water chip.

Meaning that most people must resort to some manner of tricks in order to hit the time limit (and see the cool super-secret time-ran-out cutscene :D )

The time-running-out-argh "movie" can also be viewed using the Fallout movie viewer that can be downloaded from this very site, if anyone's interested. It's not overly gripping, though.

It's not even a movie, just a still image. Never knew it existed until I saw it after expanding the DAT files.

I do that but I still only got to level 56 before my computer melted.

The time limit in Fallout is good for realsim but it insured that I always finish the game in at most 10% of the time of Fallout 2, even allowing for size.
