GMail

Oooh. My only question is, when does it start!? I wanna be first in line for that shit!

Oh. And the article didn't say anything about POP3 support. I wonder if it will have that. That would definately kick Yahoo and MSN/Hotmail's ass all over the place, several times over.

[sarcasm]Now all we need is a Google messageing service.[/sarcasm]

To finance the service, Google will display advertising links tied to the topics discussed within the e-mails. For instance, an e-mail inquiring about an upcoming concert might include an ad from a ticket agency.

Heh...someone figured out a good business plan, versus selling wood paneling on gaming sites. It took long enough.

Thing is though, this is NOT an April Fool's joke.

The timing and wording of Google's press release, however, immediately generated speculation on online forums that the news was an elaborate April Fool's prank by Google.

Google spokesman David Krane, reached Wednesday night, admitted that the "color and personality" of the press release -- which is dated "April 1 UTC" and includes phrases such as "millions of M&Ms later, Gmail was born" -- "was indeed in the spirit of April 1" but said that Gmail was a serious product.

"We are beginning to test a free e-mail service," Krane told MSNBC.com.

Revolver is right. This is an april fool's joke. There is no sense in giving away freely 1 gigabyte. Imagine the capacity of the server's HD to support this volume of information. Most people are going to use that mail to keep pictures they cannot keep at home or at work. :twisted:

Remember that Google cannot violate your mail without a legal authorization......

Looks good so far...

But is there any word on what kind of advertisement we'll have to put up with?

@Ozrat: Yes.

Who the hell needs a gig of mail space anyway?

Pics, Clips, Movies.... You can store fallout and fallout 2 there. Install at work and keep the savegames in your mail. If you need to erase it you just install that game again and keep playing with your stored savegame.

Use your imagination. The problem of this Gmail is the time to login in your account. Nowdays it's painfully long when there is a worm infestation in the net. Imagine the worms sending entire movies to you. :x We are going to see a new level of spam too.
