Good Books- on War

I actually haven't read any books on war at all, after I went over the books I read, I came to that conclusion. Heh, I did read some of Clancy's work...but that's all the same, and more praise of the USA than anything else.

I was/am(Need to finish it....bah, library trip...) Tolstoj's War and Peace, but I doubt you can really call it a war book....

You cannot discuss war books without mentioning the absolutely great books written by the danish author Sven Hassel.
Hassel was in the German army during the WW2, and has written 14 books about his experiences. (And no, he was not a nazi) He is one of the world most sold authors, and i still don't get why so few people have heard about him.

I'm not gonna make a whole big deal out of this, even if i want to, but check out his fan site and see for yourself... And for gods sake, read at least the first book! (I've read it five times now and it still amazes me every time i read it.)

Amen brother. I could not agree more.
Hazel was in a panzer punishment battalion during world war one. You see everything from the germans side with two main companions littlebrother and joseph porta. He has a beautifull dark humour even though i can see how he has coppied some of the style from All quiet on the western front.

I trully recomend all of the books by him, but i don´t think you should belive anything that stands there. Some of it seems a little fictional.

Then there is Catch 22 who everyone should read, if only for the laugh. It is a great book. It puts light on some of the strange sides of war, and how the hunt for prestige in the army can give you little respect for human life. ANd how absurd war can be.

I also love " the hunt for red october."

I just saw the HBO series for A Band of Brothers and read the book some time back. I am not sure which one I liked more, though I did appreciate the mini-series.
