Google releasing an OS?

Just another linux distribution. With Google marketing power, it will succeed.

Good news everyone!

yea, but unless they do better support for windows games or something, it wont be much better than any other linux flavor.

noteable, but not interesting unless they do better windows emulation than whats available.

I think people underestimate how much Microsoft's monopoly is about them being an evil conglomerate vs people just liking convenience.

Most people use Windows because it's easy to use, and because everyone else uses it, so all programs are set for Windows.

That puts the bar at introducting a new OS pretty high. Still, Google has to, because they know they have to produce something before their ridiculous stock-bubble pops (and it will, inevitably, if they consistently continue to fail to produce)...

The OpenSource thing is a bit of a stretch. The Register is taking mega-leaps to quick conclusions, but I wouldn't be surprised if they're correct.

Huhwhat? Oh. I guess so. I just feed off of superciliousness and cynicism. :P

But anyways, despite that I believe that Microsoft played at least a bit dirty to get where they are, I agree with you about the convenience bit with Windows. It's why I use it, and definitely why the majority of my family and friends use it. Conversely, that's also the same reason that two of my cousins do not use it - their work and computer habits make whatever flavor of Linux their OS of choice. I'm sure the same applies to people who balk at non-OS X systems, etc. Familiarity, right tool for the right job and all that.

Chrome OS will be nice on netbooks i'm sure. kinda like a more beefy Android.

but it'll keep you from playing fallout on your netbook, which is perfectly possible on a netbook with XP on it. as such, Chrome OS doesn't stand a chance of getting on my netbook. ;)

edit: i'm kinda wondering what google means with a new windowing system... will they replace the whole X part and write a totally new manager? or just kde style desktopping but different? could mean both...
