Well, technically, a half is a half. Exactly a half. Nonsensical Stuff like 'uneven halves' or a 'bigger half' only exists in colloquial speech.

I think we can agree on one thing: French definitely isn't. Logic, that is.
It just sounds ghey or hot, depending your sex. Well, and on the sex of the French person.

I would use "broke in half", but it's still grammatically correct. Whilst it's true that it could theoretically be misleading as to whether it was the apple or the floor which broke, English grammar usually makes the leap of assuming that people aren't ignorant douches who can't use context to guess which of two nouns should be the subject.
