Gun Turret for sale!

First time out of the vault
Real Life Gun Turret

Samsung has partnered with Korea university and developed the machine-gun equipped robotic sentry. It is equipped with two cameras with zooming capabilities one for day time and one for infrared night vision. It has a sophisticated pattern recognition which can detect the difference between humans and trees, and a 5.5mm machine-gun. The robot also has a speaker to warn the intruder to surrender or get a perfect headshot. The robots will go on sale by 2007 for $ 200,000 and will be deployed on the border between North and South Korea.

Well, there you go folks.... no more late night walks accross the border..

Sounds promising. I think the prices for tree-costumes will also go up with the release of the turrets. :D

"Hearing this, Saruman was so impressed that he immediately purchased a batch and had them deployed around Isengard."

Hah, it can distinguish between trees and humans, but what about animals? I guess they don't get the choice to surrender.

Yeah. The other point:

Why Korea? Why guns?
They need peace and harmony, a new government (North Korea) and people who invest in the country/countries.
But nooooo... that do they buy? GUUUNS!! This world gets more and more ridiculous!

Also, I'm sure that I heard the music that starts halfway through in that video on the page linked in the initial post before. Metal Gear Solid Perhaps? Some sort of Tom Clancy game? It sounds really familiar.

EDIT: I'm blind, somebody already spotted it in the comments. Pirates of the Caribbean.. I was way off

Watch the empty shells in the video. It takes some time after the shot until they drop out of the turret. I reckon that's a weak spot, because that might clog the turret.

Another thing is tactics against such a turret. There should be about SEVEN MILLION tactics how to get past such a thing without beeing identified as a human.

Treefolk for the win!

I would expect in the near future...

Breaking development today in the battle to re-take South Korea from North Korea. It seems the enemy has taken over 75% of South Korea and there secret strategy for infiltration was only discovered today. Apparently with the average cost for sentry turrets being substantially cheaper than your average soldier they had nothing, but sentrys guarding the border to save money on military spending. The North Koreans boldly dressed up as trees and swiftly took the border with almost no losses...more at eleven.

And once again it boils down to guerilla fight, one camouflaged man with hand grenade and $ 200.000 is gone. Wondering in what time such devices will be in common use

This thingy is quite interesting, but for 200 000 bucks I'd expect something more advanced. It should at least be capable of making coffee. I wonder if it would be able to distinguish people from animals if it wore eyeglasses.

In 2142, of course. Then we'll have mechs, laser rifles, plasma grenades and invisibility devices. Oh yeah, and lots of bugs.

i don't get why everyone is so excited about this? it's just a turret like the one FN Herstal has been selling over a decade coupled to a craptic AI.
(although FN sells it with more goodies: 7.62mm to .50CAL (or 40mm automatic grenade launcher), coupled to special smoke grenade launchers that the special camera can see through, but the human eye cant)

really... it's nothing new or special.
just that most corporations, like FN, prefer to put a human controller somewhere (remote) that is warned whenever there is suspicious movement rather than having the AI figure out to shoot or not.

either way, craptic AI or not, on the NK/SK border it cant do much harm, i guess. but in a serious environment? i wouldnt trust it at all...

more like a LAW or an antique russian RPG.

Samsung and weapons, interesting...

The weapon itself looks like it belongs in the early nineties or something like that :)

Moderately cool, but still pretty weak in terms of capability. About half way through that video they are so playing Iron Chef music

Now I know I'm the only Uber-nerd who actually has laser-disc (I'm not Uber enough to know the ALT code to type a U with an umlaut) but they released it on DVD recently- there are similar weapons in the film "Aliens" in the extended special edition. They kill several aliens but are eventually overwhelmed.

When I saw "Gun Turret for sale!" I was hoping for one of those real turrets from C&C and Red Alert :(
