Hacking Fallout 1's Demo

Prosper

Where'd That 6th Toe Come From?
Has anyone tried removing some of the limits in the fallout 1 demo?

e.g.
Unable to save a .gcd
Unable to play as anyone but demo default character

Hmm why? It is just a demo. A good one, ok. But would it be worth the work?

Depends on how much work is needed. IMO, it would take very little. But its been a good 15 minutes and i have been unable to find the message "Demo version. Using default character" in Falldemo.exe.

Well, I even can not play the demo on my computer anymore. So why should somebody do this? :>

Wouldn't it be better to port the demo 1:1 as a mod for Fallout 2?

Imagine a full cracked Fall1 demo... every noob could begin to play fallout. :)

many new members to the fallout community could sprout!

Because of Fallout 3, there will be a lot of new members. :>

I believe i found our line of code!

004A7DD3 - 75 1a - jne 004a7def

change it to je, and you can click the load game button, but then there is a black screen instantly and an application error.

What?

The ability to save/load and create your own character without restrictions is important. its one of the big differences between the demo and the regular fallout 1.

if we can crack the exe enough to mimic F1 full features, we can supply the hacked .exe to others and they can get a taste of fallout.

I doubt that really impacts the ability to play around with the demo much. Why would you need to save/load in a 15-minute demo?

The demo is modable. We could expand it to real game lengthyness.

That is an option. Though I myself feel the demo already shows enough of what Fallout really is to entice the interest of anyone who likes games like Fallout.

So really: it sounds like too much effort for nothing.

Fallout 1 is hard to modify. Nearly nobody is doing it (excepted some crazy russians). The Fallout 1 demo is even harder to modify, so why should somebody take this up? ;)

Isn't the demo already implemented in the megamod?
Althought I remember that just going there would bug your savegame...
Maybe you can find the solution for this?

Yes, it is included. Going there no longer corrupts your games as of version 2.33. However, there are still bugs with it.
But, overall, I don't think this idea of expanding the demo to be as large as a regular game is really worthwhile. It really would be better to simply add the demo location to Fallout 1 than build onto the demo.

1. If anyone has experience with ollydbg, i have a question for you.
How do i get it to run windows 95 games without it freezing up?
===

On a side note it seems the error message i am looking for is stored in a file rather than in the application as an ascii string.

I'm sure the "Using default character" message is in a msg or txt file, yes. Didn't you look there? Anyway, I can only agree with everyone else that this is a fruitless mission. The thing keeping the untold masses from enjoying the Fallout demo isn't the fact that you can only play as one character.
