WASHINGTON (AP) - The Bush administration is offering a novel reason for denying a request seeking the Justice Department's database on foreign lobbyists: Copying the information would bring down the computer system.

"Implementing such a request risks a crash that cannot be fixed and could result in a major loss of data, which would be devastating," wrote Thomas J. McIntyre, chief in the Justice Department's office for information requests.

Advocates for open government said the government's assertion that it could not copy data from its computers was unprecedented but representative of generally negative responses to Freedom of Information Act requests.

"This was a new one on us. We weren't aware there were databases that could be destroyed just by copying them," Bob Williams of the Center for Public Integrity said Tuesday. The watchdog group in Washington made the request in January. He said the group expects to appeal the Justice Department's decision.

HAAHAHAHAAHAH! I'm so moving to the US.

Oh...uhm...discuss

PS: nothing to hide here. Nooohooo. Pay no attention to the little database behind the curtain.

Funny how this comes so recently after the Supreme Court decided that Cheney need not tell who is energy advisors were (see- OIl Lobby).

It's 2004. Stupid "sun spot" excuses don't fly anymore, for the same reason why "computer operator" isn't a valuable skill today.

Seems Bush administration is running out of innocent explanations for the fact that they are turning USA into a corporate dictatorship.

I imagine finding new, more sensical excuses will be the first order of business on the next Trilateral Commission meeting.

Copying the information would bring down the computer system.

The only possible answer: SQL Server. j/k

Micro$oft err..... Bush's administration treats its clients err... the taxpayers as a bunch of dumb puppets. I think they are going to have a big surprise in the end of 2004.

Actually, knowing US bureaucracy, that excuse might just be true. Never underestimate the stupidy of bureaucrats in large groups or with technology.

This is exactly the type of thing that worries me about government and politics more than anything else in the world - the fact that they tell obvious lies, everyone knows that they're lying, yet there are no consequences beyond them probably having a vague feeling of embarrassment over the media ridicule. I'm not old enough to know if it was ever any other way in this country, but jesus, it seems like politicians in the old days at least made an attempt to project an image of honesty and integrity. Now no one bothers and no one really expects anything else of them.

Trust me, your politicians are angels of God when compared to the lying SOB's we have here in Croatia. Projecting an image of honesty and integrity? Bwahahaha! Why waste time projecting an image when you can fruitfully use your position to gather as much personal wealth and influence as possible? It's not like morons... errr, tax-payers can do anything about your blatantly obvious corruption and notorious lack of ethics.

Lemme guess Ratty. Most of your politicians have some sort of immunity against most crimes. Just like here. It'll be funny though to see their face when they find out that immunity doesn't protect you from a .30-06 in the brain meat.

What bothers me more than immunity is the reluctant acceptance of such practices by politicians as well as common people, as if corruption, nepotism and conflict of interests are normal and morally acceptable, and not utterly despicable. I agree with you on the .30-06, though.
