Halp pls!! With Custom maps

Vault Feller

First time out of the vault
Custom maps I got off of duck and cover don't have any playable characters to command I can see spawn points around the map when I pull the map up in the editor but when I actually play it there aren't any and also we're to go to see new maps people have made because nobody ain't posted on duck and cover in well years lol anyway can anyone help

I have only done one map with the editor and I don't recall ever importing it into the game, but can you not place a spawn point yourself?

*Or if not that, press F8 to play the map in the editor?

Don't really know how I only know just enough to bring it up in the editor I tried the f8 thing in editor it just took me back the the desktop when I go to play the map in single player it takes me to a black screen we're the (cam) is out of sight of the map and when I put the cursor on the top of the screen it brings the map into sight other than that that's it no character selection no troop selection for selecting the people for my squad not even pre selected ones for me to command all I can do is just look at the awesome map I can not play

Try loading an official map from the game, and press F8; it is the way to play the map in the editor. If it does not work on the imported map, then perhaps something is wrong with it. [IDN]

I just tried it on the maps that came with the game it just brings me back to the desktop. I have been tinkering with it all day and I think I may have pin pointed my problems ether I didn't do something right when I was following the directions on the read me to get it to work or the maps I got off of duck and cover we're multi player ones because the site has different links you can click on to take you to ctf skirmish scavenger maps and so on when I go to play one of them as if I was playing online it works but it immediately ends because no one but me is playing so I went to the single player part of the site were the single player maps are and downloaded one off of there and it's a zipped file like one you get off nexus for new Vegas but it recommends win zip to unzip it witch I don't have I got express zip but anyway I think there multi player ones for online I read somewhere I can't remember if it was on the internet or in the files of the game but it said that you can play custom maps online but the person you are playing with has to have the map installed too so when I get win zip I'll try that and everything should go we're it should but back too the installing the editor part I don't think I done it correctly because I can only place entities and no ground/floor or buildings and some of the stuff in the entity part seems like it's missing stuff

Here's a link to we're I got em if you wanna take a gander do you know any were else that has downloadable maps people make? I think the last post on duck and cover was in like in 2002 lol
Those maps are for Fallout:Tactics (as you certainly already know).

I mistook the topic; my mention of pressing F8 to play was for Fallout 2's map editor. Apologies O.o

I tinkered around with the FoT editor, and found it to be harshly unintuitive; and with apparently no map preview/play option. In the game I was only able to play on multiplayer mode; single player mode never once allowed me for character selection. Multiplayer mode allowed me to select a party, then they appeared in the map—but of course they (being the only ones) had already won the match as soon as the game began. One action, and the game terminates.

There are some active FoT modders still here; they are the ones to ask.

It's okay

Fallout 2 has a map editor???!!!

Also I figured I'd share the news I heard reading the interwebs as I do did you know you can still play tactics online without game spy using game ranger I think I seen people on here talking about it and there is like 1 video on YouTube describing how to do it

It sucks that the editor in tactics is so hard to use i think editor in tactics is a really cool idea I can look at some of the objects and characters but you gotta like tell them what to do or they will just stand there when you save the map and then go to play it I had to do it to the maps I downloaded I haven't figured out how to place a floor or ground yet I think it refers to them as tiles but the objects I can see are really cool

Oh sorry you want to reach me maybe? Don't know much about multiplayer I'm afraid, but I know these three things :

1) In the editor, there are severald types of spawning points. Single player, Team, Generic, Revisit, etc. I guess "Team" spawning point is what you need? I think also that you have to assign them a specific Player number for them to work.

2) In the Level tab, there are two options to the left that gives you the chance to setup the teams (hostile to friendly, with Multiplayer enabled or not... based on player numbers) and the players (human or computer). I am quite certain they have to be all interconnected with the spawning points.

3) In Select tab, there are 3 check that look important : Teams Only Game, Allow Choose Squad, Has Points Limit. Most of my single player maps have those checked anyways (except Team Only Game of course), but I'll definitely check this if I were you

Good luck mate!

Hello thanks. I Figured some of how to build maps by just messing around with it figured out how to place walls, object placement height to stack stuff and I just wanted to know how to make maps to play myself and how to download single player maps and if There is a modern website to go for new maps to download and stuff

Hi hi!

I don't think there are much of these ressources anymore, but a nice way for you to grab a big bunch of maps would be simply to take a mod, find it's "missions" folder and start playing with thoses. Some problems you could encounter (like in my mod, must be the worst for that I'm afraid), would be :

1) Some tiles that could be missing in your own Tactics folder, resulting in having black squares around.
2) Objects that you don't have the .ent file or the locale/game/items.txt entry in your own Tactics folder, resulting in having objects with no description, or correct sprite. Same for actors, actors you don't have the .ent file will have no name and no inventory.
3) Triggers, quests and variables that are used in other map. If you don't have all the maps involved, they will not work well.

Most gamers are happy to share their maps and let you make use of them for your own projects. I guess from that you could start poking around a bit.

As for modding, there is an editor readme file that can be quite helpful in your Tactics folder. I also came across this tutorials page a long while back : http://jj86tutorials.stgfc.com/

Finally, I can tell you these gems from the map editor, that should save you a lot of trouble.

1) Select tab offer two options, "Use bounding box" (select a bunch of tiles by dragging a square around them - you must have the right level) or "Use Visible Check" (you just need to click on the tiles and use shift to select more than one.
2) Use ctrl + arrows to move a tile/entity or a group of tiles/entities around
3) Use ctrl + page up / page dwn after selecting a tile/entity or tiles/entities to move it/them up or down levels
4) Use shift + click to select multiple tiles in the tile tab. When you place them after, they will be put at random, that will help you create more diversity in your terrains
5) Use option Tools/New Occlusion Data to render roofs to make them pop when you pass under them. You do this at the end of map making to "update" it.
6) Use Tools/Update Tiles Used to bring your animated tiles to work. If you don't do this, they will be stuck. This can create a bug where the new tiles you place are the wrong ones. Just do this option and save/close the map.
7) Use the option in the Select tab "Save Clip" to save a bunch of selected tiles to be used in another map. Use "Load Clip" to load a .clp file you previously saved, press ctrl + v and voilà, you have copied part of a map to another map.
8) When you select tiles using "Use Bounding Box", hold alt to select tiles on ALL levels in the selection.

Thanks

I also read a little bit of the read me in the game files that explains the map editor it wasn't exactly straight forward lol I had to read it to see how to get my editor working in the first place
