Heartache by the Number

When it came to this quest. Which option did you go for? The Violent solution or the non violent one? I know there's a way to do both and reap the benefits of two perks but in this play through I didn't want to exploit bugs or glitches this time around. For me it's a bit of a moral dilemma and my reputation with the NCR to which I care about but then again I don't care about them. It's more like me trying to stay neutral or both good reputations with the NCR and the Legion. So when it came to this quest which would you say is best or which option did you choose?

I usually go with a cleansing of the Silver Rush but with Crimson Caravan I only kill Mclafferty, there is no loss of reputation and it feels like justice is served. I never liked the bureaucratic approach as it just felt like a hollow victory.

A hollow victory? In what way? What makes a real victory? And also, if you're a space monkey- How's space?

It feels hollow in that we don't get to see justice served, had they sent a group of Rangers to arrest the Van Graffs and Alice Mclafferty I would probably always go that route, but we only get a promise that maybe someday when it's important they might be in trouble. Also based on doing the entire Van Graff quest line I don't see anything happening to them since they are the NCR's new friends. As for space, strangely enough, it smells of elderberries.

Crimson Caravans and Silver Rush are intrinsically mercenary operations. The former may nominally be NCR, but they don't really value anything more than money. So it really shouldn't matter whether you're Legion or NCR really.

I tend to go pacifistic since the ending does make it clear that screws get put down on businesses like Crimson Caravan and the VanGraff family starts feeling the pinch. If you kill Alice McLafferty and the local Van Graff clan, then Rose starts attacking caravans which forces trading companies out of the Mojave. This is inherently bad if you're going for Independent, House or NCR; and very probably Legion victory. It is never a bad thing to trade. Rose's storyline is pretty cut-and-dry about impulse control, it's not about good or evil or what cause you serve. It's about having power and not using it.

Basically my analysis is very consequentialist. I lean to Independence and such a cause is still best served if the caravans still do business as usual, even if the NCR has withdrawn from the region. Your immediate problems is that there is no central government and you still want outlaying settlements to prosper. Trade improves that situation immensely.

I take a very Followers of the Apocalypse view of things. First, do no harm. Extant harm is a fact of life. But it is little good to propose a cure that's worse than the disease. Rule with a light touch.

It honestly depends on the character I'm playing. Some characters would prefer to go the diplomatic route, since it causes more long-term harm; some characters would prefer the diplomatic route because it avoids direct confrontation; some characters would prefer the diplomatic route because it preserves lives; some characters will just kill everyone because they're hot-headed; some characters will just kill everyone because of some perceived slight by Alice or Gloria; some characters will kill everyone because they don't believe the NCR can take care of it; some characters will kill everyone because they honestly didn't bother to think the problemt though; etc.

I think I'm about 50/50 on that one, which perk Cass gets doesn't mean much to me.

I always choose the peaceful option since it´s a big middle finger to both companies.

Still, it doesn´t stop me from droping by the Silver Rush to buy the plasma caster with a bullet discount.

Shoot too bad I already killed em both. Shoot they might suffer a little bit.

I'd kill them, mainly for the Legion victory.
Well that seems to work good for a legion victory in the Mojave but I'd think maybe the Crimson Caravan would still be there with the peaceful option in hope to do trade with the Legion in the near future.

And see, this is what I'm arguing.
Caesar doesn't view a clash of civilizations or trade as inherently a bad thing either, otherwise he wouldn't be trying to "settle" in New Vegas as his "Rome" or advocate Hegelian dialectic.

More concretely, he uses frumentarii to infiltrate other cultures and Crimson Caravan is a definite inroad in this respect.

There is no faction where keeping the Crimson Caravan in an operable state in the Mojave is a bad thing.

That depends on how you play Honest Hearts, stifling CC is good for Happy Trails.

I like the pacifistic route where you also steal Gun Runner plans. That way the Gun Runners come in and murder the lot of them in the ending.

Diplomatic solution turns the Van Graffs hostile and I get to kill them anyway. I even made a mod that gives me ownership of the Silver Rush after that solution. Then, cleaning the place out isn't "stealing."

But the ranger mentions that if you kill either of the factions that justice likely wont be served in California, letting the gun runners kill CC and the Van Graffs is basically the same as killing them yourself.
